Restrictions on parking enacted near local school
BY KATHY BARATTA
Staff Writer

MANALAPAN - The Township Com-mittee has adopted an ordinance that restricts parking on the west side of Pease Road between Old Queens Boul-evard and Pine Brook Road.

Specifically, parking will be prohibited on the same side of Pease Road as the Pine Brook School.

The committee adopted the amendment to the township's no parking ordinance following a request from Manal-apan-Englishtown Regional School District Superintendent of Schools Maureen Lally.

Lally had previously met with Police Chief Stuart Brown and Township Administrator Alayne Shepler to inform them that several "near (accident) misses" near the school's two driveways were behind her request that officials consider adopting parking restrictions on Pease Road at or near the school.

In addition to the restricted parking, crosswalks will be painted at the school's two driveways and signs will be posted to alert motorists that the crosswalks are in place.

At Brown's request, the curbs in the no parking areas will be painted yellow so that motorists may easily identify the areas where parking is not permitted.

Exceptions to the parking ban will be made during evening and after-school events when a large group of people is expected at the school (i.e., concerts, parent-teacher conferences, etc.).

In a related matter, Brown announced that 11 extra parking spaces have been added to the parking lot behind the Pine Brook School.

In other business at the Oct. 11 meeting, the committee passed a resolution to enact a curfew on Mischief Night (Oct. 30) and Halloween (Oct. 31). The resolution states that "no person under the age of 18 years shall be permitted in any public place, public street or public property in Manalapan between the hours of 9 p.m. Oct. 30 to 6 a.m. Oct. 31, and 9 p.m. Oct. 31 to 6 a.m. Nov. 1."

Exceptions will be made during those hours for any juvenile who is returning from work, night school, fraternity, church or school meetings, a doctor's or dentist's office, and any one accompanied by an adult guardian over the age of 18.
