Walk will raise funds to fight world hunger

The Freehold Clergy Association will sponsor the Freehold Area CROP Walk on Oct. 15. Participants will have their choice of completing a walk of 1, 3 or 6 miles through Freehold Borough.

The Freehold Clergy Association includes the clergy and leaders of more than 20 Roman Catholic, Protestant, Jewish and Muslim congregations, as well as the chaplaincy of CentraState Healthcare System, Freehold Township.

Money raised in the Freehold Area CROP Walk will help Church World Service to provide sustainable self-help and development, disaster relief, and refugee assistance in more than 80 countries. Part of the proceeds (25 percent) will be returned to Open Door and Joshua House to help meet local hunger needs.

The host site for the CROP walk will be the Reformed Church of Freehold, 67 W. Main Street, Freehold Borough. Registration will be held at 1 p.m. and the walk will begin at 1:30 p.m.

There will be 1-mile, 3-mile and 6-mile routes marked out in the neighborhoods of Freehold Borough. A map will be provided at registration. Pledges should be turned in at the walk if possible. Each walker who brings $25 or more in pledges on the day of the walk and a jar of peanut butter will receive a Freehold Area CROP Walk T-shirt. The person who brings in the largest pledge amount on the day of the walk will become the walk marshal.

The CROP cap will be awarded to any walker presenting $200 or more on the day of the walk. Youths will receive confirmation service project credit. Water tables will be spaced along the route and volunteers will assist with street crossings.

For more information or to obtain walker forms, call Pat Medley, pastor of Hope Lutheran Church, Freehold Township, at (732) 462-7545, or visit Hope Lutheran Church, 211 Elton-Adelphia Road, Freehold Township, between 7:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. weekdays.

UBS Financial is the CROP walk's first corporate sponsor. Paul Siegel is the group's liaison with UBS.

Late returns of walker packets can be made to the Rev. Frederick Parrish, Freehold Clergy Association treasurer, at Bethel A.M.E. Church, 3 Waterworks Road, Freehold 07728.
