Sports Shorts Ray Navarette is playing for the Long Island Ducks of the Independent Atlantic League. Navarette, a graduate of Marlboro High School who played minor league ball for the Pittsburgh Pirates and New York Mets, is a third baseman for the Ducks, who won the first-half championship of the league (39-24) and automatically has qualified for the playoffs. Navarette is batting .272 for the Ducks. After starring at Marlboro, Navarette enjoyed an All-Big East career at Seton Hall University before being drafted by the Pirates his junior year.
The Freehold Tornadoes Intra-State Travel 14U Softball team will hold tryouts Saturday at Michael Tighe Park, Georgia Road, Freehold Township, starting at 5 p.m. All interested girls are invited to try out. The Freehold Tornadoes 10U Travel Softball team is looking for players for the 2007 season. Girls must be 10 years old or younger on Dec. 31, 2006, to be eligible. The Manalapan Torpedos, a new 11U travel baseball team forming for spring 2007 play in the USABL, will hold tryouts on Oct. 14. Players born between April 30, 1995, and April 30, 1996, are eligible to play. For additional tryout information, call Tom as (732) 863-5992.
St. John Vianney graduate, Manalapan resident and Harvard freshman soccer player Brian Grimm scored the game-winning goal on a header in overtime in a game against the University of Vermont on Sept. 19. It was the first start for the midfielder. Harvard has a record of 5-2.
Minor league softball coordinator Phil Scimone and 40/60 Major League World Series manager Len Settanni wish to invite all Manalapan-Englishtown resident girls 8-10 years old as of Jan. 1, 2007, (girls who turn 11 on Jan. 2, 2007, are eligible to play) to play softball for the Manalapan Belles. The Monmouth Women's Basketball League (a fall/winter recreational league that runs from October through March) is looking for players. The Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation will hold its Jersey Shore Golf Tournament on Oct. 12 at Deal Country Club in Deal.
