Obituaries Robert Douglas Bennett Mr. Bennett, 56, of Freehold Township, died Sept. 11 at home. He worked in the home-building industry for many years, and was a 1973 graduate of Fairleigh Dickinson University, Rutherford (with campuses now in Madison and Teaneck). Mr. Bennett was predeceased in March by his father, John "Pete" Bennett. Surviving are his mother, Helen Bennett of Freehold Township; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Ronald and Valerie Bennett of Jackson, Jeffrey and Janet Bennett of Ocean Township, and Scott Bennett of Freehold Township; two nieces, Megan and Cassie; and a nephew, Ryan. Funeral services were held at Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold, followed by interment at St. Rose of Lima Cemetery, Freehold Township.
Veronica H. Zalewski Domalewski Mrs. Domalewski, 86, of the Port Monmouth section of Middletown, died Sept. 11 at Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel. Born in Jersey City, she resided in Laurence Harbor, and Keansburg, prior to moving to Port Monmouth five years ago. She was a homemaker. She was a communicant of St. Ann's Roman Catholic Church, Keansburg. She was a member of the Middletown Seniors Club. She was predeceased by her husband, Adam Domalewski in 1981; three brothers; and two sisters. She is survived by two sons, Anthony Domalewski of the Belford section of Middletown, and Richard Domalewski of Marlboro; a sister, Jennifer Plodzien of Whiting; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church, Red Bank. Interment was at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington. Arrangements were by Day Funeral Home, Keyport.
Michael Patrick Kelsey Mr. Kelsey, 54, of Freehold Township, died Sept. 13 at home. Born in Neptune, he was a lifelong resident of Freehold. He was a 1973 graduate of Rutgers University, New Brunswick, where he was a member of the Scarlet R Club, Rutgers' athletic fundraising arm. He was employed by the Rural Development division of the U.S. Department of Agriculture as director of community and business programs for the state of New Jersey. He was also a member of the Monmouth Rugby Club and the Monmouth County Historical Society. Mr. Kelsey was predeceased in 2005 by his father, William Kelsey. Surviving are two sons and a daughter-in-law, Patrick Kelsey and Dr. Jennifer Sceppa of Manheim, Pa., and Andrew Kelsey of Chester; two daughters, Christine Kelsey of Hoboken and Colleen Kelsey of Freehold Township; his girlfriend, Marion Letterie; his mother, Rose Marie Kelsey of Freehold; two brothers, William Kelsey of Point Pleasant Beach and James Kelsey of Lenoir, N.C.; two sisters, Anne E. Boehm of West Sand Lake, N.Y., and Maureen Kelsey of Palermo, Sicily, Italy; and a niece and a nephew. A funeral liturgy was offered at St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church, Freehold, followed by interment at St. Rose of Lima Cemetery, Freehold Township. Freeman Funeral Home, Freehold, was in charge of arrangements. Rice Jr. Mr. Rice, 82, of Freehold Township, died Sept. 14 at home. Born in Delhi, N.Y., he had lived in Hollis, Queens, N.Y., before moving to Freehold Township in 1965. Prior to retiring in 1999, he was a salesman for the Eastern Tool Warehouse Corp., New York City. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he participated in the invasion of Normandy, France. Mr. Rice was a parishioner of St. Robert Bellarmine Roman Catholic Church, Freehold Township. He also enjoyed attending classic car shows, and was a member of the Classic Knights Car Cub of Old Bridge. He was predeceased in 1999 by his wife, Jean M. Rice. Surviving are four sons, John W. Rice of Bristol, Tenn., Kevin P. Rice of Toms River, Michael Rice of Freehold Township and Timothy J. Rice of Weston, Vt.; a daughter, Maureen Gozzo of Toms River; two brothers, Frederick Rice and Richard Rice, both of Spring Hill, Fla.; three sisters, Dolores Shallis of Bradenton, Fla., Theresa Quigly of East Patchogue, Long Island, N.Y., and Mary Rom of Cleveland, Tenn.; and nine grandchildren. A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Robert Bellarmine Church, followed by burial at Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Cemetery, Arnytown. The Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home, Freehold Township, was in charge of arrangements.
Phyllis Ryser Thorne Mrs. Thorne, 84, of Freehold Township, died Sept. 11 at home. Born in Philadelphia, she had lived in Whiting and Point Pleasant before moving to Freehold Township nine months ago. She was a longtime member of First-Park Baptist Church, Plainfield, as well as a member of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in Columbus, Ohio. She was also a former member of the North Plainfield Woman's Club. She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, the Rev. Phyllis A. Heffner of Columbus (Ohio), and Janet E. and Gary C. Smith of Freehold Township. Memorial services will be held in Ohio at a later date at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church. Memorial donations may be made to the Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) of Central Jersey Hospice Program, 141 Bodman Place, Red Bank 07701. Benjamin W. Curry Jr. Mr. Curry, 34, of Union Beach, died Sept. 14 at home. Born in Augusta, Maine, he had previously resided in Newark and Keansburg before moving to Union Beach six years ago. He was a machine operator for New Jersey Iron, Jackson. He was a communicant of Holy Family Roman Catholic Church, Union Beach. Mr. Curry is survived by his wife, Pam Perricone; two sons, Benjamin Curry III and Paul Perricone, both at home; a brother, John Curry of Union Beach; two sisters, Denise Keddell of Keansburg and Dawn Tye of Englishtown; an uncle, Peter Zartin of Vermont; three nieces; seven nephews; and a cousin, Joseph Barlett of Florida. A funeral Mass was offered at Holy Family Church, followed by interment at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Keyport. Day Funeral Home, Keyport, was in charge of arrangements.
William F. Herberger Mr. Herberger, 84, of Freehold Township, died Sept. 13 at home. He was born in the Bronx, N.Y. He attended Columbia University, New York City, and graduated from St. Joseph's University, Philadelphia. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1942 to 1971, retiring as a lieutenant colonel. During World War II, he was a ball turret gunner, and in 1951 he was assigned to the 307th Group of the Strategic Air Command as assistant director of wing personnel. After serving in the military, he was employed by the E.J. Lavino Co. as a chemical engineer and later by Quigley Co. (which became a subsidiary of Pfizer in 1968) and Pfizer Pharmaceuticals, Old Bridge, where he created many patents. He was predeceased by his wife of more than 60 years, Jean Herberger. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Donna and John Palmerio; a son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Janice Herberger; and five grandchildren. The funeral liturgy was celebrated at St. Rose of Lima Chapel, Freehold, followed by entombment at St. Rose of Lima Mausoleum, Freehold Township. Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold, was in charge of arrangements.
