Dynarski, Freeman win Travia Recovery 5K
Eric Dynarski conquered the conditions and a field of more than 150 runners to win the Richard Travia Recovery 5K held Saturday at Turkey Swamp Park in Freehold Township.
Friday night's downpour made the course inside Turkey Swamp Park muddy and wet. Dynarski was the only runner under 20:00, clocking 19:58 in his winning effort .
Desi Singletary (20:10) and Nick Arnell (20:12) were second and third.
Maggie Freeman, a police sergeant in Manalapan, was the women's champion and finished seventh overall. She posted a 20:19. Pam Spadola was just three seconds in back of Freeman at the finish in ninth place overall (20:22).
The race produced a pack finish with the second through 13th runners separated by only 15 seconds.
The Top 10 were: Dynarski, Singletary, Arnell, Jon Gloth (20:13), Jim Richardson (20:15), Adam Stivala (20:18), Freeman, Chris Cedar (20:20), Spadola and Jeff Gero (20:23).
First in the racewalking division was Peggy Shafai (45:17).
Age group winners for the men were: 19 and under, Evan Dziobak (23:34); 20-29, Gloth; 30-34, Salvatore Masella (29:09); 35-39, Paul Alston (24:19); 40-44, Clinton Hardy (20:24); 45-49, Gero; 50-59, John Kellenyi (20:23); 60-69, Joe Rovere (43:48); and 70 and up, Ralph Garfield (23:46).
Women's age group winners: 19 and under, Kylie Moore (27:23); 20-29, Jennifer James (26:49); 30-34, Meredith Peterson (28:18); 35-39, Heather McCreight (46:19); 40-44, Mary Vitale (29:46); 45-49, Beverly Walsh (27:57); 50-59, Margie Lambert (29:50); 60-69, Carolyn Heuser (30:32); and 70 and up, Aileen Starkey (58:50).
The race was directed by the Freehold Area Running Club with the NTAF Mid-Atlantic Spinal Cord Injury Fund. It was a fundraising event for Richard Travia, a Freehold Borough High School graduate who was paralyzed last summer after breaking his neck while body surfing in Manasquan. The injury has left him with minimal movement. He is currently undergoing out-patient therapy.
Money raised from Saturday's race will help Travia and his parents cope with the financial burdens associated with his injury and rehabilitation.
