First aid squad seeks cadets MARLBORO - The Morganville First Aid Squad cadet division is looking for energetic and committed individuals to volunteer their time. According to Margot Lazow, 17, the administrative lieutenant of the cadet division, volunteering as a cadet with the first aid squad enables teenagers to meet new and interesting people, exposes them to possible medical and health-care careers, and serves as a great learning experience. The cadets are looking for teens between the ages of 16 and 18 who live in the Morganville section of Marlboro. Lazow said the cadet division has spots opening up because several current members are going away to college and/or turning 18. When a cadet turns 18 he or she may become a regular member of the first aid squad. According to Lazow, individuals applying for a position are required to submit general information about themselves, fill out an application and participate in an interview/information session. After that is completed, attendance at cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid classes is required. Lazow said three ambulance checks are also a prerequisite to becoming a cadet. She said this includes becoming familiar with an ambulance and the equipment. Once a person becomes a cadet, 16 riding hours are required each month. According to Lazow, cadets shadow the regular members of the first aid squad on calls. The cadets help to retrieve equipment, help put oxygen masks on people who need one, take blood pressure, help to transport patients and move the cot in and out of the ambulance. In addition to the responsibilities of being a cadet, Lazow said there are functions such as overnights, game nights and fundraising activities. For more information on becoming a cadet, call the Morganville First Aid Squad at (732) 591-1200 or e-mail Lazow at MxAxRxGxOxT@aol.com.
