Obituaries

Robert William Conklin

Mr. Conklin, 76, of Jackson, died July 14 at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, Newark. Born in Newark, he had lived there until he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. After serving in the military, he moved to Freehold in 1953 before moving to Jackson three years ago. A graduate of Rutgers University, Newark, Mr. Conklin was the owner and operator of Brown's Trucking, Newark, from 1953 to 1955. Prior to retiring in 1996, he was employed by the Freehold Township School District as head custodian at the Marshall W. Errickson School. He was a communicant of St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church, Freehold, and a former vice commander of American Legion Post No. 54, also of Freehold. He was predeceased by a brother, Michael Lynch, and a sister, Eileen Gleason. Surviving are his wife, Marilyn Zetwick Conklin; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Robert J. and Linda Conklin of Farmingdale, John and Melissa Conklin of Burlington, Joseph and Christa Conklin of Atlantic Highlands, and Michael Conklin of Ewing; two daughters and a son-in-law, Kathleen Thompson of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Patricia and Mark Nelson of Payson, Ariz.; two sisters, Margaret Devaney of Middletown and Barbara Dugan of York, Maine; nine grandchildren; and 20 nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold, followed by interment at St. Rose of Lima Cemetery, Freehold Township. American Legion services were held as well. Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1905.

Elaine Conway

Mrs. Conway, 91, of Freehold Township, died July 14 at home. Born in Keyport, she had lived there before moving to the Freehold area 56 years ago. A former legal secretary, she had worked in Keyport. She was a communicant of St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church, Freehold, where she also belonged to the Rosary Altar Society. Mrs. Conway was predeceased by her husband, Leonard J. Conway, in 1998, as well as four sisters, Helen Boland, Edna Casper, Mabel Colaner and Gladys Wenger. Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, Edward L. and Jennifer Conway of Freehold Township, and Robert J. and Vicky Conway of Palm Coast, Fla.; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a niece, Sally Perna. The funeral liturgy was celebrated at St. Rose of Lima Church, followed by interment at St. Rose of Lima Cemetery, Freehold Township. Barbara T. McNamara

Mrs. McNamara, 77, of Cocoa Beach, Fla., died July 15 at Holmes Regional Medical Center, Melbourne, Fla., after a sudden illness. Born in Linden, she had lived in Manalapan, where she raised her family, and then resided in Waretown for 13 years before moving to Florida. Prior to retiring, she was employed by Bell Laboratories, Holmdel, as a systems analyst. She was also a former member of Our Lady of Mercy Roman Catholic Church, Englishtown. Surviving are her husband, Edward; two sons, Kenneth McNamara of Grand Isle, Vt., and Thomas McNamara of Freehold; two daughters, Susan Herlihy of Toms River and Jane Greenwood of Jackson; and three grandchildren. A funeral liturgy was celebrated at Our Lady of Mercy Church, followed by interment at Old Tennent Cemetery, Tennent section of Manalapan. Bryan G. Preston

Mr. Preston, 75, of Freehold Township, died July 16 at home. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he had lived in the Ridgewood and Glendale sections of Queens, N.Y., before moving to Freehold Township in 1996. Prior to retiring in 1992, he was a driver for the U.S. Postal Service in Flushing, N.Y., for 20 years. A U.S. Army veteran, Mr. Preston had served in Korea. He was also a parishioner of St. Robert Bellarmine Roman Catholic Church, Freehold Township. Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Dorothy Preston of Freehold Township; three daughters and sons-in-law, Janice and Kevin Vesey of St. James, Long Island, N.Y., Patricia and John Putre of Mahopac, N.Y., and Jacqueline and Gary Fuchs of Manalapan; a brother, John Preston of Minnesota; and eight grandchildren. A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Robert Bellarmine Church, followed by burial at Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Cemetery, Arnytown. Fay Fannie Lefanto

Mrs. Lefanto, 90, of Silvermead, Freehold Township, died July 17 at home. Born in New York City, she had lived in Old Bridge before moving to Freehold Township 37 years ago. Prior to retiring in 1986, she was an assembler for the Peerless Tube Co., Freehold. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Arlene and Franklin Theiss of the Iselin section of Woodbridge; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A memorial Mass will be offered at a later date. The Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home, Freehold Township, is in charge of arrangements.

Ruth Mary Orr

Mrs. Orr, 93, of Toms River, died July 17 at Kensington Manor, Toms River. Born in Marlboro, she had resided in Freehold before moving to Toms River two years ago. She was a longtime member of both the Monmouth Grange and the Freehold First Baptist Church, where she belonged to the Women's Group. She was also active in the Freehold Women's Club. Mrs. Orr was predeceased by her husband, Stanley M. Orr. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Lois and Donald Grant of Venice, Fla.; a son and daughter-in-law, Stanley (Pete) and Isabella Orr of Manalapan; four grandchildren, including Carol Newcomb of Hazlet; and eight great-grandchildren. A memorial service was held at the First Baptist Church of Freehold. Freeman Funeral Home, Freehold, was in charge of arrangements. Maureen O'Neill Zywicki

Mrs. Zywicki, 68, of Freehold Township, died July 17 at home. Born in Jersey City, she had lived in Bayonne until 1965, when she moved to Manalapan. She resided in Manalapan for 42 years, settling in Freehold Township in 2004. A 1955 graduate of Holy Family Academy in Bayonne, she was employed by the Manalapan-Englishtown Regional School District as a secretary at Lafayette Mills School. She was a communicant of St. Robert Bellarmine Roman Catholic Church, Freehold Township, and a former parishioner of St. Thomas More Roman Catholic Church, Manalapan. She was also a founding member of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation's Central Jersey Chapter. Mrs. Zywicki was predeceased by a sister, Joan O'Neill. Surviving are her husband of 47 years, Alfred Zywicki; five daughters and four sons-in-law, Ellen and Jeff Mittler of Mays Landing, Suzanne Zywicki of New York City, Carol and Todd Wiltshire of Matawan, Patricia and Dr. John DiFilippo of Essex Fells, and Nancy and Joseph Witt of Freehold; four brothers, Thomas O'Neill of Brea, Calif., John O'Neill of Freehold, Richard O'Neill of Mountainside and Brian O'Neill of Spring Hill, Fla.; and eight grandchildren. A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Robert Bellarmine Church, with the Rev. Tom Cembor officiating. Burial followed at Old Tennent Cemetery, Tennent section of Manalapan. The Clayton & McGirr Funeral Home, Freehold Township, was in charge of arrangements. William F. Bischoff Jr.

Mr. Bischoff, 99, of Hollywood, Fla., died July 18 at Florida's Hollywood Medical Center. Born in Bergenfield, he had resided in Howell for most of his life before moving to Florida in 1980. Prior to retiring in 1965, he was a self-employed farmer and a member of the Farmingdale Grange. He was also a communicant of Church of the Little Flower, Hollywood, and a former communicant of St. Catherine of Siena Roman Catholic Church, Farmingdale, where he had served as both a trustee and an usher. In addition, he was a member of Knights of Columbus Council No. 4851, Hollywood. Mr. Bischoff was predeceased in 1948 by a son, William Bischoff III, and in April by a daughter, Eileen Tapscott. Surviving are his wife, Florence; two daughters, Grace Bischoff and Florence Bischoff, both of Pembroke Pines, Fla.; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. A funeral liturgy was offered at St. Catherine of Siena Church, followed by interment at St. Rose of Lima Cemetery, Freehold Township. Freeman Funeral Home, Freehold, was in charge of arrangements.

Paul F. Chessare

Mr. Chessare, 87, of Freehold, died July 18 at Gateway Care Center, Eatontown. Born in New York City, he had resided in Brazil, Switzerland and Belgium before moving to Freehold in 1977. Prior to retiring, he was employed by the Cameron Machine Co., Dover, as a sales manager, and was also the owner of a printing business. A veteran of World War II, he was a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Corps, where he served as a navigator in the 848th Bomb Squadron in the European theater of operations. In 1944, he flew 30 combat missions over Europe and participated in the D-Day invasion of Normandy, France. He received an Air Medal with four oak-leaf clusters; a European-African-Middle Eastern (EAME) Theater ribbon with four Bronze Stars; and an American Defense Medal. Mr. Chessare was predeceased by his wife, Thelma, in 2005. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Margery Chessare of Greenfield, N.Y.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Alan Bachrach of France, and Laura and Robert Pizanie of Howell; a brother, George Chessare of Indiana; and two grandchildren, Lisa and Daniel. A chapel service was held at Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Cemetery, Arnytown, where interment followed. The Freeman Funeral Home, Freehold, was in charge of arrangements.

Solomon S. Grossman

Mr. Grossman, 85, of Cincinnati, died July 19 at The Anderson Nursing & Rehabilitation in Anderson Township, Ohio. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he had lived in Freehold for most of his life before moving to Cincinnati five years ago. He was the proprietor of Grossman Trucking, Freehold. Mr. Grossman served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of the Knights of Pythias, Jewish War Veterans Post No. 359 and B'nai B'rith, all of Ohio. He also belonged to the B'nai B'rith bowling league. Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Lillian; a son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Robin Grossman of Lakewood; a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy "Harriet" and Byron Baxter of New Richmond, Ohio; a brother, Jacob Grossman of Delray Beach, Fla.; a sister, Sylvia Schatzman of San Francisco; and a grandson, Benjamin Grossman Baxter. A graveside funeral service was held at Freehold Hebrew Benefit Society Cemetery, Freehold Township. Freeman Funeral Home, Freehold, was in charge of arrangements. Marie G. Greco

Mrs. Greco, 84, of the Lincroft section of Middletown, died July 21 at her son's home in Freehold Township. Born in New York City, she resided in West Palm Beach, Fla., prior to moving to Lincroft 18 months ago. She was a homemaker. She was a communicant of and member of the Rosary Altar Society at St. Leo the Great Roman Catholic Church, Lincroft. She was a former communicant of Holy Name Roman Catholic Church, West Palm Beach. She was a member of the Sons of Italy. She was predeceased by her husband, Vincent Greco in 2003; and two sons, Charles Anthony Greco and Vincent Greco Jr. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Anthony V. and Domenica Greco of Freehold Township; and two grandchildren. A funeral liturgy was celebrated at St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church, Freehold. Arrangements were by Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold.

Kenneth V. Hayes

Mr. Hayes, 87, a former Marlboro resident, died July 19 at The Meadows of Leicester Rehabilitation & Nursing Center, Leicester, Mass. He had been a resident of the center since mid-March. Born in Long Branch, he resided in Marlboro for almost 20 years before moving to Canastota, N.Y., in August 1976. He relocated to Oneida, N.Y., in September 1993 and then to Leicester last September. Prior to retiring in 1988, Mr. Hayes was the owner of Ken's Appliance Service, Canastota, for 34 years. While in Marlboro, he was a farmer and an avid gardener. He was also a communicant of the Old Brick Reformed Church, Marlboro, where he served on the consistory. Mr. Hayes was predeceased by his wife, Claire Koetter Hayes, in December. Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Gail and Daniel Lehman of Oneida, and Wendy and David Orth of Leicester; eight grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Memorial services were held at the Old Brick Church, with the Rev. Roland Ratmeyer officiating. Ironside Funeral Home, Oneida, was in charge of arrangements. Joseph H. Wilfong

Mr. Wilfong, 76, of Marlboro, died July 19 at home. Born in Jersey City, he had lived in Marlboro for the past 34 years. A U.S. Army veteran, he retired from the military after serving 21 years as a medic. Mr. Wilfong began his military career in 1948 and served in Japan, Germany, Korea and Vietnam. He was the recipient of the National Defense Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal and the Army of the Occupation of Germany and Japan Medal. He also received the Purple Heart in both Korea and Vietnam. Upon retiring from military service, he attended Kean College, Union, and became a welding inspector for the Karl Koch Erecting Co., Carteret, and the Robert W. (R.W.) Hunt Co., Pittsburgh. He enjoyed fishing and boating, and volunteered for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 2-3, through which he received five Buddy Parsells awards. He assisted on 9/11 and received numerous other awards as well, such as the Boat Force Operations Insignia. Surviving are his wife of 43 years, Susan Baum Wilfong; his children, Mary Joe and Reynold Walbrook, Suzanne Biniecki, Joseph C. and Caroline Wilfong, John Wilfong and Robin Herman, and James Wilfong and Claudia Thomas; and 10 grandchildren. A funeral liturgy was offered at Our Lady of Mercy Church, Englishtown, followed by interment at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Perrineville section of Millstone. James R. Trotta

Mr. Trotta, 67, of Freehold Township, died July 20 at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. Born in Newark, he had lived in Freehold for the past 60 years. Prior to retiring, he was a security guard for Nestle Co., Freehold. He was a communicant of St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church, Freehold. A fan of the New York Yankees, he also enjoyed dinners at Frankie Fed's, Freehold, and weekends in Atlantic City. Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth Springsteen Trotta; a son, Richard J. Trotta of Brick; three daughters, April E. Moore of Brick, Sharon A. Trotta-Konopelski of Freehold and Joanne L. Alt of the Morganville section of Marlboro; a brother, Jack Trotta of Jackson; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. The funeral liturgy was celebrated at St. Rose of Lima Church, followed by entombment at St. Rose of Lima Mausoleum, Freehold Township. Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold, was in charge of arrangements.
