Women's club selects local girl for career event

Laura Porth, an incoming junior at Freehold High School, Freehold Borough, recently attended the Girls' Career Institute at Douglass College, Rutgers University, New Brunswick. The event is sponsored by the New Jersey State Federation of Women's Clubs of GFWC. Laura was selected by the GFWC Molly Pitcher Woman's Club of Freehold Township.

For four days, almost 200 rising seniors from all parts of New Jersey stayed on the campus of Douglass College and attended workshops about various career choices, including pediatrics, performing arts, oceanography, state police, publishing/journalism, computer science and engineering.

The New Jersey State Federation of Women's Clubs of GFWC, founder of Douglass College, has held GCI since 1947. Local women's clubs pay to send a student to the four-day event to help her plan her career. Laura intends to pursue physical education.

Italian festival at library

headquarters in August

"Adoriamo Gli Italiani! (We Love Italians!): A Joyous Festival" will be held at the Monmouth County Library Headquarters in Manalapan during the month of August.

The festival will consist of two Italian films with English subtitles, a concert and a daylong festival.

The films are "Il Monstro" Aug. 21 at 2 and 6:30 p.m., and "Il Postino" Aug. 22 at 2 and 6:30 p.m..

Theresa Pessano Siegert, soprano, will be the featured singer in the concert, "Songs My Father Taught Me," which will also include Puccini arias, sung by Siegert with a tenor. The concert will be held Aug. 24 at 7 p.m.

The daylong festival, Aug. 26 from 10 a.m to 4 p.m., will consist of Italian food demonstrations and samples by Mondo Italia Scuola e Centro Culturale, and a lesson on how to toss a pizza crust by Luigi Schiano of Orlando Italian Restaurant and Pizzeria, Colts Neck.

There will also be a demonstration on how to grow a pizza garden, hands-on lessons in creating Italian crafts, a travelogue and language classes.

There is no charge.

One-on-one computer help available at library

One-on-one computer assistance will be offered during August at the Monmouth County Library Headquarters, Manalapan. Assistance will be offered to patrons who wish to learn about the Internet, e-mail, and the library's online services. There is no charge. Anyone interested can sign up at the reference desk or make an appointment by calling (732) 431-7222.

Local H.S. student elected to national organization

Caitlin Pettinato, of Manalapan, has been selected for membership in the National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS). The organization recognizes the top scholars in the nation and invites only those students who have achieved superior academic excellence.

She is a student at Freehold Township High School.

Based in Atlanta, the NSHSS offers its members scholarship opportunities, academic competitions, free events, members-only resources, publications, programs online forums and other benefits.
