Obituaries Saul G. Hornik Mr. Hornik, 65, of Marlboro, and Jericho, N.Y., died Dec. 6, at Calvary Hospital, The Bronx, N.Y., of complications due to lung cancer. Originally from The Bronx, Mr. Hornik graduated with a bachelor of science degree from the University of Connecticut in 1962 with honors and a master’s degree in pharmacology from Brooklyn College of Pharmacy. He moved to Marlboro with his family in 1969. Mr. Hornik was elected to his first term as mayor of Marlboro in November 1979 and served as mayor from January 1980 through December 1991. He also served a term of office on the Western Monmouth Utilities Authority, Manalapan. Mr. Hornik stayed close to the medical field throughout his professional career. He first worked at and then started an advertising firm which represented several well known national medical publications. He also served as a director for several Israeli medical companies and acted as a consultant for others. Recently, Mr. Hornik, together with a partner, produced a series of books for physicians which depicted through archival photographs different ailments in critically ill patients dating back to the 1800s. Mr. Hornik was also involved with many Israeli causes, including Volunteers for Isreal and Sar-El, in which he had been active in since 1988. Mr. Hornik is survived by his wife, Debbie Weinberger; two daughters, Melissa Wight and Amit; a son, Jonathan; three stepchildren, Tomer, Arielle and Scott; his sister, Janice Weber Unger; and four grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, Adam.
Linda B. Suydam Lawnik Mrs. Lawnik, 54, of Sayreville, formerly of Marlboro, died Nov. 30 at home. She was predeceased by her parents, Helen and Marvin Suydam. Surviving are her husband, Thomas F. Lawnik; three children, Lindsay Lawnik of East Brunswick, and Katie Lawnik and Evan Lawnik, both at home; two brothers, Marvin Suydam of Millstone and Chris Suydam of Marlboro; a sister, Wendy Leber of Marlboro; and a granddaughter. Services were held at Sayrewoods Bible Church, Old Bridge. Cremation was private. Memorial contributions may be made to the Cancer Institute of New Jersey, New Brunswick, or to the Bristol-Myers Squibb Children’s Oncology Unit at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, also New Brunswick.
Gary W. Carrier Mr. Carrier, 54, of New Brunswick, died Dec. 8 at home. Born in South Royalton, Vt., he had lived in Marlboro before moving to New Brunswick 10 years ago. Mr. Carrier was an automobile salesman at Dayton Dodge, Dayton. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War. He was predeceased by his parents, Francis and Clarabelle Haskins Carrier; two brothers, Leroy and Stanley Carrier; and two sisters, Margaret Carrier and Beverly Swasey. Mr. Carrier is survived by two sons, Kenneth F. and Adem M. Carrier, both of Manalapan; a daughter and son-in-law, Kari L. and Andreas Atkinson of New Hampshire; a brother, Douglas Carrier of Florida; three grandchildren; and his former wife, Kay Carrier. The Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold, was in charge of arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 801 Broad St., Shrewsbury 07702.
Margaret Jane McCarthy Mrs. McCarthy, 86, of Holmdel, died Dec. 8 in Holmdel. She was predeceased by her husband, Frank, in 1998. Mrs. McCarthy is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth and Fred Correnti of Freehold Township. A funeral liturgy was celebrated at St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church, Freehold, followed by interment at St. Rose of Lima Cemetery, Freehold Township. The Freeman Funeral Home, Freehold, was in charge of arrangements.
John H. Seiber Mr. Seiber, 96, of Freehold Township, died Dec. 2 at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. Born in Battle Creek, Iowa, he had lived in Freehold Township since 1942. Mr. Seiber was an insurance salesman for the Washington National Insurance Co., Freehold, before his retirement. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 4374, Freehold. His wife, Pearl Seiber, died in 1999. Mr. Seiber is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Ted and Mary Ann Seiber of Freehold Township, and Wayne and Wanda Seiber of Florida; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Funeral services were held at the Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold, with the Rev. William L. Frederickson, pastor of First Baptist Church of Freehold, officiating. Dora Sussman Herr Mrs. Herr, 89, of Valley Village, Calif., formerly of Freehold, died Dec. 9 at Encino Hospital, Encino, Calif. Born in New York, she had lived in Freehold for many years before moving to Encino nine years ago. Mrs. Herr worked as a meat packer at Foodtown, Freehold. She was predeceased by her husband, Samuel, in 1972. Mrs. Herr is survived by her children, Arnold Herr, Stephen Herr, Maris Herr and Sharon Baldassari, all of California, and Barry Herr of Las Vegas; four grandchildren; and many friends. A funeral service was held at the Freeman Funeral Home, Freehold, followed by interment at Congregation Agudath Achim Cemetery, Freehold Township.
Gerald Vincent Henwood Mr. Henwood, 71, of Marlboro, died Dec. 8 at home. Born in Queens, N.Y., he had lived in Edgewater before moving to Marlboro in 1969. Mr. Henwood was ordained a deacon of the Roman Catholic Church on May 17, 1980. He served as deacon at St. Gabriel’s Roman Catholic Church, Marlboro; St. Robert Bellarmine Roman Catholic Church, Freehold Township; and St. Catharine’s Roman Catholic Church, Holmdel. He was predeceased by a son, John Joseph Henwood, in 1983; and a brother, Richard Henwood. Mr. Henwood is survived by his wife of 49 years, Virginia Mary Henwood; a son and daughter-in-law, Christopher and Lynne Henwood of Long Valley; five daughters and four sons-in-law, Elizabeth and Michael Griswold of Carmel, Ind., Dianne and Michael Torri of Jackson, Claire and Gary Gellman of Plumsted, Mary Henwood of South Brunswick, and Amy and John Kostyz of Brick; three brothers, John, James and Harold Henwood; a sister, Florence Corcoran; and 14 grandchildren. A funeral liturgy was offered at St. Catharine’s Church, followed by interment at St. Gabriel’s Cemetery, Marlboro.
