Deadline Jan. 6 to apply for free courses at NJIT

New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), Newark, has announced a new program — Science and Technology Enrichment Program (STEP) — for New Jersey high school students eager to learn hands-on science and technology. Application deadline is Jan. 6.

The free program is offering five college courses, which meet Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon Jan. 28-April 29. Females and minority students are encouraged to apply. To be accepted, students must maintain a 3.0 GPA, submit two letters of recommendation from teachers and a 250-word essay describing the student’s interest in science and technology. The spring semester program offers classes in video-game development, electronic devices, chemistry, computer science and real world team-based problem solving.

Hanukkah party for

adults set for Dec. 18

The Prime Timers of Marlboro Jewish Center/Congregation Ohev Shalom will host its annual Hanukkah party from 1 to 3 p.m. Dec. 18.

The event will be held at the center’s Chai Building, and will feature entertainment, latkes and applesauce, and desserts. All adults are invited. The cost is $10.

Adolescent mental

disorders to be discussed

The Special Education Advisory Com-mittee will hold a workshop on “Under-standing Childhood and Adolescent Mental Disorders” at the Manalapan High School media center on Dec. 7 at 7 p.m. Presenter Alicia Stevenson, president of New Jersey Alliance for People Affected with Mental Illness (NAMI), will be joined by Lynn LiMato, a middle school teacher and instructor of the NAMI Visions for Tomorrow and Family to Family Courses for families coping with mental illness.

The workshop will review a variety of disorders that most commonly affect children and adolescents, including ADD/ADHD, bipolar, depression, anxiety disorders and early onset schizophrenia.

Information and techniques for family coping, self-care, and understanding how to navigate a school system for treatment will also be presented. FRHSD school psychologists will provide an overview of in-district support programs and services. Details: (732) 786-1208.

High school will host

fashion show Dec. 8

Freehold Township High School’s sixth annual fashion show will be held on Dec. 8 at 7:30 p.m. in the school’s auditorium. More than 75 outfits, complete with accessories, will be featured in the student-run show which is a class project incorporating course instruction in marketing, fashion design and promotion, and communications.

Fashion teacher Amy Lewin-Epstein will act as master of ceremonies. She will describe the outfits to the musical sounds of E-LO Productions. Students, teachers and Principal Elizabeth Higley will model the fashions. Professional make-up application will be completed by staff members from Sephora Cosmet-ics. Sephora will distribute goody bags filled with their beauty products to the first 200 attendees.

Fashions from the following Freehold Raceway Mall stores will be highlighted: Dante Tuxedo, Bon-Bon, Against All Odds, Epic, Hot Topic, 5-7-9, Espirit, World Foot Locker and Sigrid Olsen.

Other winter outfits featured on the fashion runway will be provided by Tuxedo Den, Howell, Dresses and More, Matawan, Diane and Co., Modell’s, and Lola’s, Manalapan, Annie Sez and Smith Bros., Marlboro, and Funk and Standard and NY Trends, Red Bank. Admission to the fashion show is $5.

Holiday party planned for

Freehold senior citizens

Freehold Borough will host a holiday party for the borough’s senior citizens from 1-3:30 p.m. Dec. 10 at the Freehold Elks Lodge, 173 E. Main St., Freehold. The event is only open to Freehold Borough residents, age 62 and older; caregivers will be provided. There will be no take-out orders. Reservations are required; call (732) 462-1259.

Englishtown PBA 166

collecting children’s toys

The Englishtown Police Benevolent Association Local No. 166 is conducting its annual holiday toy drive. The PBA members have chosen to donate the gifts received to the Robert Wood Johnson Children’s Hospital. The PBA is asking for donations of unwrapped gifts for children between the ages of infant to 18. The gifts may be dropped off at Borough Hall, 15 Main Street, or at drop boxes that have been placed at businesses around town. The deadline for donations is. Dec. 18. Details: (732) 446-7000.

High school students

honored for art work

Freehold Regional High School District students were recognized recently for their efforts in the Freehold Borough Spooktacular window painting contest. Students from the district decorate windows in the borough during the Halloween season.

The winners for 2005 are from Howell High School. The artists were students Susan David, Gina Molinari, Chelsea Bucsek, Lydia Czech, Caitlin Eckelson, Janine Kerrigan, Nicole Rizzi, Stephanie Hesslebarth, Bethany Guldager, Gab-rielle Creevy, Joseph Trost, Eric Wan, Marie Briard and Jeffrey Bieljeski, working under the direction of teacher John Carey to decorate the windows at CVS.

Second-place honors went to Manal-apan High School students Amanda Marie DePasquale, Elaine White and Jeremy Neiss, working under the direction of teacher Bernard O’Brien to decorate the windows at El Meson restaurant.

Third-place honors went to Freehold High School students Ashley Forsyth and Courtney Breese, working under the direction of teacher Daniel Finaldi to decorate the windows at PLS, formerly the Visiting Nurse Office.

Santa Claus will visit

with youths in Freehold

Santa Claus will make his annual visit to Freehold Borough on Dec. 10. Santa will arrive at the bus terminal, corner of Throckmorton and West Main streets, at noon and visit with children until 2 p.m. With the help of Policemen’s Benevolent Association Local No. 159 and Conrail, free toys, gifts and a photo with Santa will be given to each youngster. This marks the eighth year Santa has traveled to Freehold via a Conrail train.

Scholarship available

to culinary arts student

The Brookdale Community College Foundation has announced the creation of the Kristoffer P. Anderson Endowed Memorial Culinary Scholarship Fund at Brookdale Community College, Lincroft section of Middletown.

The $750 annual scholarship fund was created by family and friends of Anderson, a graduate of Christian Brothers Academy, Lincroft, and the Culinary Education Center of Mon-mouth County, Asbury Park.

The scholarship is available to a student in the associate’s of applied science degree in culinary arts. The recipient will be chosen by the Anderson family. For more information, call the Brookdale Community College Foundation at (732) 224-2286.

Renowned rabbi to speak

on ‘Times of Crisis’

“Hurricanes, Human Suffering, Terrorism: Fear and Faith in Times of Crisis” will be presented by Rabbi Yosef Y. Jacobson at 8 p.m. Dec. 10 at Chabad House, 26 Wickatunk Road, Manalapan.

Jacobson has lectured to Jewish and non-Jewish audiences on six continents and in 30 states. He is the author of the tape series “A Tale of Two Souls” and “Captain, My Captain,” and a professor of Kabbalah and Jewish law at the Rabbinical College Chovevay Torah in New York. He serves also as the book editor of the international Yiddish-English weekly, The Algemeiner Journal, a newspaper dedicated to preserving the language and culture of the 6 million Jews who perished in the Holocaust. In addition, he writes a weekly Internet essay on Judaism, mysticism and psychology.

In 1988, at the age of 15, Jacobson was chosen to serve on a small team of “oral scribes” and human tape recorders, charged with the obligation to memorize and transcribe three to seven hours of talks by the Lubavitcher Rebbe presented on Sabbath and Jewish holidays, when recording devices are not used.

Mensa foundation offering scholarships

The Mensa Education and Research Foundation is offering scholarships for post-high school education. Applicants do not have to be members of Mensa to apply.

Local company is drop-off site for Toys for Tots

Concorde Limousine, Freehold, is serving as a drop-off location for the U.S. Marine Corps’ Toys for Tots program. Residents may drop off new, unwrapped toys at Concorde’s office, 900 Route 33, by Dec. 15.
