Director reports another successful summer session

The director of the Freehold Regional High School District’s summer school said 2005 was a successful year for the program. The instruction took place at Colts Neck High School.

Reporting to the FRHSD Board of Education at a recent meeting, Sam Grove, the director, said 365 students were enrolled. No student who remained in the program failed to complete the appropriate work, he said.

Salaries totaled $96,976 for two administrators, two guidance counselors, a nurse, a security guard, 17 classroom teachers and one speech therapist.

A total of $3,600 in fees were paid to the FRHSD from out-of-district students who participated in the summer school program.

“The average mainstream class size went up from 14 to 18 this year, while the maximum class size was 29 with a minimum class size of six for classes in special education,” Grove told the board.

Courses that were offered included General English, Academic English, Concepts in Algebra, Algebra I, Algebra II, Intermediate Algebra, Integrated Algebra, Intermediate Geometry, Geometry, Essential and Practical Math, Concepts of Biology, Lab Biology, a physical science lab, concepts of physical science and earth science, Academic Social Studies, Regular Social Studies and Modern World History.

“We made sure our class size was consistent with the curriculum during the school year,” Grove said. “There are labs that meet once a week and those that meet twice a week.”

He said parents are advised if there are attendance problems. Progress reports are written by teachers and steps are taken if a student needs extra help.

Grove reported that the only discipline issue that was encountered was two students who were caught smoking in the parking lot.

He said he is hoping to reduce class size, particularly in math classes, next summer.
