Obituaries Anita L. DeSimone Mrs. DeSimone, 88, of Bethany Manor, Keyport, died Nov. 13 at Regency Park Nursing Home, Hazlet. Born in New York City, she resided in South Plainfield, and New York City, prior to moving to Keyport. She was a retired employee of the food service department at Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel. She was a member of Rosie the Riveter Society during World War II. She was a communicant of Holy Family Roman Catholic Church, Union Beach. She was a member of the Keyport Seniors Group. She was predeceased by her husband, Salvatore DeSimone in 1974. She is survived by a son, Sal DeSimone of Manalapan; two daughters, Geraldine Thornton of Cumming Ga., and Josephine Kral of Levittown, Pa.; and three grandchildren. Visitation will be Nov. 16 from 7-9 p.m., and Nov. 17 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at Day Funeral Home, Keyport. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Nov. 18 at 9:30 a.m. at Holy Family Church. Interment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, East Brunswick.
Joel J. Berthiaume Mr. Berthiaume, 85, of Manalapan, died Nov. 1 at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. Born in St. Louis de Gonzague, Canada, he lived in Loudonville, N.Y., before moving to Manalapan in 1968. Mr. Berthiaume was the national control buyer for Montgomery Ward, New York City, until he retired in 1983. He was a communicant of St. Thomas More Roman Catholic Church, Manalapan. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Freehold. Mr. Berthiaume is survived by his wife, Anita; two sons, John of Colts Neck and Joel of Freehold; a daughter and son-in-law, Denise and Brian Carhart of Manalapan; three sisters, Florestine Trudell of Latham, N.Y., Madeline Bourgeois of Waterford, N.Y., and Pauline Fealey of Albany, N.Y.; and three granddaughters. A funeral liturgy was offered at St. Thomas More Church, followed by interment at St. Rose of Lima Cemetery, Freehold Township. The Freeman Manalapan-Marlboro Funeral Home, Manalapan, was in charge of arrangements.
Catherine E. Thompson Mrs. Thompson, 92, of Freehold Township, died Nov. 1 at Care One at Wall, Wall Township. Born in the Port Richmond section of Staten Island, N.Y., she had resided in Freehold for the past 70 years. She was the widow of Frank E. Thompson, who died in 2001. Mrs. Thompson is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Mary Lou and Richard Clancy, and Shirley K. Thompson, all of Freehold; a sister, Beatrice Lokerson of Point Pleasant; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold, followed by interment at Maplewood Cemetery, Freehold Township.
Diana M. Strauss Mrs. Strauss, 64, of Freehold, died Nov. 2 at home. She was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and had lived in Ocean Township before moving to Freehold in 1997. Mrs. Strauss was a contract manager for Ansell Americas, Red Bank, where she was employed for the past 16 years. She was a communicant of St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church, Freehold. She was a member of STAR, an astronomy group; Synergy; and the Red Bank Players. She was an avid historian. Surviving are a son, Douglas S. Strauss of Newark, Del.; a daughter, Lynn Smith of Ocean Gate; her mother, Mary Longo of Ocean Township; a brother, Joseph Longo of Staten Island, N.Y.; and two grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold, followed by interment at St. Rose of Lima Cemetery, Freehold Township. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 801 Broad St., Shrewsbury.
Catherine R. Goeller Mrs. Goeller, 78, of Hazlet, died Nov. 7 at home. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she was stationed at several U.S. Marine Corps bases nationwide, and relocated to Hazlet 40 years ago. She was predeceased by a son, John F. Goeller in 2001. She is survived by her husband of 51 years, James Goeller; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Patricia and John Diemer of Hillsborough, Kathleen and Miles Booth of Ellicott City, Md., and Elizabeth Goeller of Richmond, Va.; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael J. and Diane Goeller of Howell; and five grandchildren. Burial was at Fair View Cemetery, Middletown. Arrangements were by John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, Middletown.
