Obituaries Joseph L. Ciaglia Mr. Ciaglia, 78, of West Long Branch, died Jan. 11 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in Red Bank, he was a lifelong resident of the Shore area. Mr. Ciaglia was a painter at National Lead, Perth Amboy, and Bendix Corp., Eatontown. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of the American Legion. He was a parishioner of Our Lady Star of the Sea Roman Catholic Church, Long Branch. Mr. Ciaglia was predeceased by two brothers, John Ciaglia and Vincent “Jimmy” Ciaglia; and a sister, Carmela Garguilo. He is survived by a sister, Nancy Congro of Freehold; seven nephews; three nieces; and several grandnieces and grandnephews. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at Star of the Sea Church, followed by entombment at Woodbine Mausoleum, Oceanport. Arrangements were by Damiano Funeral Home, Long Branch. Winslow B. “Bud” Hagman Sr. Mr. Hagman, 79, of Keyport, died Jan. 17 at Robert Wood Johnson Hospital, New Brunswick. Born in Chartley, Mass., he resided in various Monmouth County towns prior to moving to Keyport 40 years ago. He was a machinist at Alloy-Fab, South Plainfield. He served with the U.S. Navy as a Seaman 1st Class during World War II. He was a member of the Cliffwood Beach First Aid Squad, and the Keyport Seniors. He was predeceased by two grandsons, Ronald Cusumano in 2004, and Keith Tormay in 2001. He is survived by his wife, Judith Lautieri Hagman of Keyport; six sons, Peter Hagman of Riverside, Calif.; Bradley Hagman of Orlando, Fla.; Richard Hagman of Upper Blackeddy Pa.; Wayne Hagman of Marlboro; Winslow B. “Bud” Hagman Jr. of Union Beach; and Joseph Hagman of Keansburg; five daughters, Judith Cusumano of Hopelawn, Doreen Tormay of Aberdeen, Ginlia Morris of Keyport, Cheryl Hagman of Charleston, W. Va.., and Rhea Savage of Marlboro; a sister, Connie Pinnigan of Plymouth, Mass.; a brother, William Hagman of Kingston, Mass.; 17 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Interment was at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Keyport. Arrangements were by Day Funeral Home, Keyport.
Nerina “Nettie” Zilnick Mrs. Zilnick, 90, of Barnegat, died Jan. 19 at Community Medical Center, Dover Township. Born in Philadelphia, she had lived in Cape May Court House and Freehold Township before moving to Barnegat. Prior to retiring 25 years ago, she was an interior designer. She was a member of the Freehold Township Senior Citizens Club and a former communicant of St. Robert Bellarmine Roman Catholic Church, Freehold Township, where she was also a member of the Legion of Mary. Mrs. Zilnick was predeceased in 1974 by her husband, Michael Zilnick. Surviving are two daughters, Marilyn Foster of Barnegat and Bonnie Palmer of Sewell; a brother, Ralph Valeri of Cape May Court House; a sister, Yolanda Pasquarella of Glendora; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A memorial Mass was celebrated at St. Mary’s Church, Barnegat, with Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold, in charge of arrangements.
Phyllis Londner Mrs. Londner, 71, a longtime resident of Fair Lawn, died Jan. 1. She was a relationship specialist at Wachovia Bank, Glen Rock. She was also a member of Congregation B’nai Israel and treasurer of American Jewish Congress, both of Fair Lawn. Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Dorine and Michael Shapiro of Manalapan, and Ellen and Gerry Schmitt of Rockaway; a son and daughter-in-law, Howard and Lisa Londner of Fair Lawn; and six grandchildren. Services were held at Robert Schoem’s Menorah Chapel, Paramus. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 801 Broad St., Shrewsbury 07702.
Augustine M. Scafidi Mr. Scafidi, 79, of the Silvermead section of Freehold Township, died Dec. 28 at his home. Born in New York City, he had lived in Brooklyn, N.Y., and then Marlboro before moving to Freehold Township 25 years ago. Mr. Scafidi was a corporate accountant for Bristol-Myers Squibb, Lawrenceville, before his retirement. He was a U.S. Army veteran. He was a member of the Disabled America Veterans and the National Amputation Foundation. He also was a member of the Silvermead Community Club, where he was an active member of the pinochle group; a former member of the Battleground Historical Society; and a donor to the Popcorn Park Zoo, Forked River. Mr. Scafidi was predeceased by his wife, Helen Scafidi, in 1998. Surviving are two daughters, Jodi DiLiberto, of West Belmar, and Marian Barker, of Taylorsville, Ga.; three granddaughters; and three great-grandchildren. A funeral liturgy was celebrated at St. Robert Bellarmine Roman Catholic Church, Freehold Township, followed by interment at Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Cemetery, Arnytown. The Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold, was in charge of arrangements.
Emil W. MacKenn Mr. MacKenn, 94, of Howell, died Dec. 29 at Bartley Health Care Nursing & Rehabilitation center, Jackson. Born in Jersey City, he had lived most of his life in New Monmouth, where he was a communicant of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church. Prior to retiring in 1976, Mr. MacKenn was a safety engineer for the Colgate-Palmolive Co., Jersey City, for 40 years and had received a bachelor’s degree from Rutgers University, New Brunswick. He was very active in Monmouth County’s Boy Scouts of America and had been the leader of Boy Scout Troop No. 88 in Port Monmouth. Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Helen K. (Komik) MacKenn; four sons and daughters-in-law, John F. and Frances MacKenn, of Falmouth, Va., Robert W. and Monica MacKenn, of Vernon, Conn., Donald A. and Janice MacKenn, of Howell, and Stephen A. and Lillian MacKenn, of Spanaway, Wash.; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A funeral liturgy was offered at St. Mary’s Church, followed by burial at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Middletown. John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, Middletown, was in charge of arrangements.
James J. Murphy Mr. Murphy, 79, of Freehold, died Jan. 20 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Lyons. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in November 1942 and served with distinction in the Atlantic and Pacific before being discharged in 1946. He then entered the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, where he served for 20 years, and later worked as a stationary engineer for the borough of Freehold. An avid reader, Mr. Murphy was predeceased in 1994 by his wife, Mary. Surviving are a daughter, Dian McLaughlin; a son, Justin Murphy; a sister, Francie Wilkinson; two granddaughters, Tara McLaughlin and Meghan VanArsdale; and a great-granddaughter, Brittany McLaughlin. The funeral liturgy was celebrated at St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church, Freehold, followed by interment at St. Rose of Lima Cemetery, Freehold Township. Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold, was in charge of arrangements.
Phyllis I. Philben Mrs. Philben, 66, of Freehold, died Jan. 21 at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. Born in Neptune Township, she was a lifelong area resident and had been employed for the past 30 years as a certified nurse’s aide at The Manor Care Center, Freehold Township. Mrs. Philben was predeceased in 2003 by her husband, Michael Philben Jr. Surviving are two sons and daughters-in-law, William F. and Carol Wilson, and Michael J. and Heidi Philben, all of Freehold; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Liz and Tommy Robertson of Freehold, Mary Ann Wright of Texas, and Debbie and Billy Marlow of Virginia; a brother, Rudolph Ivins of Florida; a sister, Violet, also of Florida; and 10 grandchildren. Funeral services were held at Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold, followed by interment at St. Rose of Lima Cemetery, Freehold Township.
