Greater Media Newspapers purchases Latinos Unidos

Greater Media Newspapers Inc. has announced the purchase of Latinos Unidos, a 25,000 circulation, monthly Spanish language newspaper serving Ocean, Monmouth and Middlesex counties.

Greater Media Newspapers currently publishes 12 weekly newspapers serving Middlesex, Monmouth and Ocean counties, with a combined weekly circulation of 305,000.

Latinos Unidos, founded and owned by Jackson resident Jorge A. Rod, and edited by Silvina Barboza, began publication 18 months ago and has rapidly developed a loyal readership in its circulation area. It is also used by several schools in Ocean and Monmouth counties as an educational tool.

The newspaper is widely distributed throughout the three-county area and can be found in hundreds of locations including convenience stores, supermarkets and public libraries.

Greater Media Newspapers publisher Kevin Wittman said the publication represents, “a wonderful opportunity for our company to reach a new and growing audience.”

“Nationwide, the Hispanic community is the fastest-growing segment of our population and offers us, and our advertisers, a fine chance to reach this economically vibrant demographic,” Wittman said.

Rod, who has a background in public service and publishing, said he started the paper to help build a bridge between government, business and the Hispanic community. In its months of publication, he said it has filled a significant void in the marketplace and faces an exciting future.

“With our association with Greater Media, I think the sky is the limit,” Rod said. “Greater Media is a very aggressive company and it is exciting that this publication will grow by leaps and bounds. Our partnership with Greater Media will allow us to expand into new markets and improve our content.”

Rod will continue to serve as publisher of Latinos Unidos, and Barboza will serve as managing editor and designer.

Wittman said Greater Media has plans to expand the reach and frequency of the publication.

Latinos Unidos will operate out of Greater Media’s main office in Freehold Township, and will be printed at the company’s East Brunswick press.
