The New Jersey Mavericks, an 11-year-old traveling baseball team, picked up their seventh championship in the last three years winning the Central Jersey Baseball League Fall crown. The Mavericks started their playoff run with a 7-4 win over the Jersey Shore Eagles. They defeated the Hillsborough Thunder, 5-2, in the championship game. The teams were tied at 1-1 before the Thunder erupted for four runs in the fifth inning.

The Mavericks are: Thomas Elkow, Kevin Barcen, Richie Bellemare, Matthew Lorenzetti, Scott Heinz, Vincent D’Acunto, Steven Weir, Bobby Cartas, C.J. Iaccobellis and Danny Tramontano,

The coaches are Mike Elkow, Lee Barden, Rich Bellemare and Mike Cartas.

The Mavericks are looking to add a few players to their roster for the upcoming 2005 season. The team plays its home games in Old Bridge and practices in Marlboro. Boys who are 11 and do not turn 12 until after Aug. 1, 2005, are eligible. There are no residency requirements.

The Mavericks are a high school prep team that trains during the winter, plays two league games and one other game each weekend during the spring, travels to tournaments locally and out of state during the summer and concludes the year with a fall tournament. Players interested in being a part of the Mavericks should call Mike Elkow at (732) 851-5050. Blue Dragon Martial Arts, Marlboro, was invited to participated in the Pennsylvania State Governor’s Cup, which was sanctioned by the U.S. Taekwondo Union. The local martial arts competitors more than held their own with several bringing home championships in the Black Belt Division.

The area winners were: Kristopher Tan, Marlboro, first in Forms, second in Sparring; Anthony Mujica, Englishtown, first in Forms and first in Sparring; Tiffany Yap, Marlboro, first in Forms; Anthony Gallo Jr., Manalapan, second in Forms and second in Sparring; Peter Gallo, Manalapan, first in Forms and first in Sparring; Joseph Gallo, Manalapan, second in Forms and first in Sparring; Sean Balanon, Old Bridge, first in Forms and Second in Sparring; Zachary Geltzeiler, Jackson, first in Breaking and first in Sparring.

Master Edward Hsu, is the Blue Dragon Martial Arts Instructor and coach.

The Howell Eclipse, an U14 girls team, became the first team from the Howell United Soccer Club to win a State Cup title. The Eclipse, made up of players from the general area, defeated the nationally ranked Montclair Aristocrats, 1-0, in the final, played on the Doughboy Fields at Fort Dix. Lauren Cadott scored the game’s only goal in the second half. Goalie Amanda Simon was outstanding throughout the game and made the one goal stand up.

The Eclipse was formed just six months ago.

Playing for the Eclipse were: Briann Bradley, Sara DeMuth, of Jackson; Kaitlyn Cizek, Manalapan; Alexa Rozzi, Jessica Sciscione and Francesca Yaccarine, of Freehold; Allie Clifton, Matawan; Amanda Simon, Brick; Allyson Fourniadis Olivia Grimes, Sara Shaughnessy, Sarah Tulla, Stephanie Wood and Lauren Cadott, of Howell; Lisa Vallenziano, Wall; and Jillian Luicci, Old Bridge.

P.J. Farrell, of Burlington, coaches the Eclipse assisted by Joe Cadott, of Howell.

The Battle of Monmouth Freedom, an U12 boys team, won the fall Premier Blue Division championship in the Howell Holiday Soccer Tournament. The Freedom went 3-0-1 outscoring their opposition 8-0 over the two-day event.

The Monmouth Power Sports Clubs is holding tryouts for its boys U12 basketball team for the upcoming AAU season. Candidates must be born on or after Sept. 1, 1992, or be in the sixth grade as of January 2005. Tryouts will be held Dec. 15 and 18. Previous travel experience or AAU experience is required. The Manalapan Thunder, an established travel baseball team, is seeking pitchers for the 2005 spring season. Players must be 11 or younger as of Aug. 1, 2005. For additional information, call John at (732) 446-8516.

The Monmouth County Warriors are looking for players for their 12- and 14-year-old AAU boys basketball teams. Tryouts are Saturday and Dec. 18 from 7-10 p.m. at the YMCA of Western Monmouth County, East Freehold Road, Freehold.
