Freehold resident asks what immigrants are doing for community
This is a response to a letter to the editor headlined “Treat Immigrants to America as People, Not Things,” written by the Coalition for the Empowerment of Latinos and the Working Poor and published in the Dec. 1 issue of the News Transcript.
The only statement in subject [letter] from your publication is that our federal government has failed to support us in reference to the challenges we all are facing as a result of the influx of immigrants to the United States.
The large number of immigrants is not just affecting Freehold. Taxpaying citizens from all over the United States are complaining about it. However, I believe that they all have given up, since the federal government is doing nothing to stop it.
The letter further discusses what we should be doing for the illegal immigrants. Is it not enough that they are being fed hot meals on a daily basis, food is made available from donations at the various food pantries, free health care is being provided, and a free education is being provided to their children (yes, I know they are U.S. citizens)?
My question is what are they giving back to the communities that are so generously giving to them?
The illegal immigrants are considered to be the “working poor.” In many cases they are making higher wages than some honest U.S. citizens who are paying 40 percent of their salary to the U.S. government.
Are they donating their time to support the schools, and/or their communities? What are the illegal immigrants doing to pay us back for our generosity?
