Fight brings officers to bar
BY CLARE MARIE CELANO
Staff Writer

FREEHOLD — Police responded to a report of a fight at Denims restaurant and bar, Park Avenue, on Nov. 25 that led to the hospitalization of a borough man and an injury to an officer.

According to Freehold Borough police Capt. Michael DiAiso, upon their arrival at the restaurant, officers Wendy Papp, Chris Otlowski and John Reiff attempted to break up a crowd of people surrounding a man who was lying on the dance floor and bleeding from the head.

The officers attempted to calm the crowd and moved to break up other disorderly areas, according to DiAiso.

The captain said the person laying on the dance floor was a 33-year-old borough man who had been assaulted by another man. The injured individual was transported to CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township, by the Freehold First Aid and Emergency Squad.

No charges have yet been filed in connection with that assault.

DiAiso said the officers continued to break up fights in the restaurant. Patrick Warren, 21, of Jamesburg, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault on a police officer after striking Otlowski on the jaw.

DiAiso said Warren continued to resist arrest and ignored the officers’ request to quiet down and be cooperative. The captain said Warren continued to yell, kick and use foul language, and tried to break free from the arresting officer. He was eventually apprehended, placed in handcuffs and charged with resisting arrest, obstruction of the administration of the law and disorderly conduct.

Warren refused medical treatment and was taken to the Monmouth County jail, Freehold Township. His bail was set at $10,000.

DiAiso said that during the incident, Matthew Zupanc, 21, of Point Pleasant, attempted to open the door of the patrol car Warren was sitting in order to speak with Warren. Zupanc was arrested and charged with obstruction of the administration of the law. He was transported to headquarters in a separate police car, processed and released.
