Freehold youngster places in art contest
Olivia LeBlanc, 11, of Lafayette, La., has been named the grand prize winner of the 2004 Deck The Walls Kids Masterpiece Contest. Her entry, a watercolor still-life painting titled “Red Coleus,” was selected by judges from more than 100 entries submitted by young artists from across the nation.
As the grand prize winner, Olivia and her parents will receive a weekend getaway to Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla. The prize package includes airfare, lodging, passes to Walt Disney World theme parks and spending money.
Baxter Ewers, 5, of Lynchburg, Va., won the People’s Choice award. His painting, “SpongeBob,” received the most votes in the on-line competition. He wins a $1,000 savings bond, an art activity kit and professional framing of his work by Deck The Walls.
Olivia and Baxter placed first among their age groups in the competition.
Jerrod Berven, of Chuckey, Tenn., was the runner-up among contestants under 8 years old.
Gabrielle Peragine, of Freehold Township, was the runner-up among contestants 9 and older.
Jerrod and Gabrielle will each receive a $500 savings bond and have their work professionally framed by Deck The Walls.
A panel of judges assembled in St. Louis chose “Red Coleus” as one of 10 finalists in November, and from the finalists they selected Olivia’s entry as the grand prize winner.
