Bertha L. Rice Hyman

Mrs. Hyman, 72, of Keyport, died Oct. 15 at home. Born in Matawan, she resided there before moving to Keyport 49 years ago. Mrs. Hyman was the resident supervisor at Fisher’s Boarding Home, Keyport, for 15 years, retiring in 1989. Prior to that, she worked at Matawan Undergarment Co. She was a member of St. James AME Zion Church, Matawan. Mrs. Hyman was predeceased by her husband, John E. Hyman; two brothers, Leroy Rice and Ozzie Fisher; and two sisters, Frances Holmes and Annie Robinson. She is survived by two sons, Rodney Shields of Keansburg and David Washington of Fayetteville, N.C.; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Darlene Hyman, and Veronica and Willie Cancelrivera, all of Keyport, and Tonya and Godday Hornsby of Manalapan; three brothers, Morris Rice of Florida, Richard Rice of Matawan, and Troy Graham of Charlotte, N.C.; three sisters, Marie Johnson of Orlando, Fla., Joyce Holmes of Matawan, and Linda Roberts of Charlotte, N.C.; and four grandchildren. A funeral service was held at St. James Church. The Braun Funeral Home, Keyport, was in charge of arrangements.

Richard C. Kerrigan

Mr. Kerrigan, 73, of Freehold, died Oct. 17 at Kimball Medical Center, Lakewood. Born in Atlantic Highlands, he had resided in Freehold for the past 47 years. A U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, he was a graduate of Monmouth College (now Monmouth University), West Long Branch, who worked as a technical engineer for Base Ten Systems Inc., Trenton, for 10 years, retiring in 1993. He had previously worked for EAI in the Eatontown area for 25 years. Mr. Kerrigan was a communicant of St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church, Freehold. He was also a former volunteer coach for 10 years for the St. Rose of Lima intramural basketball league, as well as a volunteer coach for Little League and the Babe Ruth League. He was predeceased in 2003 by his wife, Elizabeth S. Kerrigan, and in 2002 by a grandson, Stephen James. Surviving are a daughter, Diane Lapp of Howell; three sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Diane Kerrigan of Howell, John and Sarah Kerrigan of Toms River, and Stephen and Lynn Kerrigan of Brick; two brothers, Lawrence Kerrigan of Indianapolis and Bruce Kerrigan of Atlantic Highlands; six grandchildren; and a great-grandson. A funeral liturgy was held at St. Rose of Lima Church, followed by entombment at St. Rose of Lima Cemetery, Freehold Township. Freeman Funeral Home, Freehold, was in charge of arrangements.

Lester N. Alleruzzo

Mr. Alleruzzo, 82, of East Brunswick, died Oct. 19 at home. Surviving are his wife, Margaret; two sons, Paul of Mason, Ohio, and Robert of Howell; three daughters, Margaret Bartel of Spotswood, Mary Nelson of East Brunswick and Marilyn Korba of Freehold Township; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Services were held at Freeman Manalapan-Marlboro Funeral Home, Manalapan. Memorial contributions may be made to the Visiting Nurse Association, 141 Bodman Place, Red Bank, NJ 07701-9978.

Joan Catherine Quirk Montecalvo

Mrs. Montecalvo, 61, of Old Bridge, died Oct. 21 at home. Surviving are her husband, Domenick V.; a son, Domenick of Manalapan; three daughters, Joanne Montecalvo of Bayonne and Mary and Lisa Montecalvo, both of Old Bridge; two sisters, Barbara Kenney of the Iselin section of Woodbridge and Judith Rzeczkowski of Jersey City; two grandsons; two aunts; and 12 nieces and nephews. A funeral liturgy was offered at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, Old Bridge. Entombment was in St. Gabriel’s Mausoleum, Marlboro. Memorial contributions may be made to the Susan G. Theresa Rose Cipolla

Mrs. Cipolla, of Manalapan, died Oct. 21 at Applewood Estates, Freehold Township. Born in New York City, she had lived in Jackson Heights, N.Y., and Roosmoor before moving in 1999 to Manalapan, where she was a communicant of St. Thomas More Roman Catholic Church. Prior to retiring, she was a bank teller for Queens County Savings Bank, Corona, N.Y., for 10 years. She loved to crochet, dance and cook. Mrs. Cipolla was predeceased by her husband, Frank, in 1976 and a son, Carmen, in 1975. Surviving are a daughter, Ann Walsh of Manalapan; a daughter-in-law, Valerie Cippola of Uniondale, N.Y.; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A funeral liturgy was offered at St. Thomas More Church, followed by interment at Calvary Cemetery, Woodside, N.Y. Freeman Manalapan-Marlboro Funeral Home, Manalapan, was in charge of arrangements.

Elizabeth Almenas

Mrs. Almenas, 84, of Toms River, died Oct. 22 at Community Medical Center. Born in Philadelphia, she resided in Matawan for 60 years, prior to moving to Toms River six months ago. She was a volunteer cafeteria worker at St. Joseph’s School, Keyport. She was a member of the ladies auxiliary at Washington Engine Co. No. 1, Matawan. She was predeceased by a grandson, Robert L. Ives III in 1999; a brother, John Biras; and two sisters, Albene Urbeles and Mildred Lewis. She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Henry J. Almenas, of Dover; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Joan and Thomas Howell, of Potomac Falls, Va., Patricia Keck, of East Windsor, and Karen and Robert Ives Jr., of Toms River; a brother, George Biras, of Freehold; a sister, Helen Sporman, of Irvington; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Mary of the Lake Roman Catholic Church, Lakewood. Burial was at St. Rose of Lima Cemetery, Freehold. Arrangements were by D’Elia Funeral Home, Lakewood. Marian G. Clayton

Mrs. Clayton, 73, of Freehold Township, died Oct. 26 at home. Born in Spring Lake and raised in the Tennent section of Manalapan, she was a longtime resident of the Freehold area. Mrs. Clayton was a legislative aide for Assemblywoman Clare Farragher before her retirement. She was a communicant of St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church, Freehold. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Robert F. Clayton; two daughters and sons-in-law, Jannette and Quenton Lowe of Freehold, and Audrey and Eugene Berardo of Middletown; a sister, Florence Bennett of Freehold; and three grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold, followed by interment at Maplewood Cemetery, Freehold Township. Vickie Lynn Hance

Mrs. Hance, 48, of Howell, died Oct. 26 at home. Born in Washington, Pa., she was a longtime resident of the Freehold area. Mrs. Hance was employed in the billing department at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. She was a member and past president of the American Legion Post No. 54 Auxiliary, Freehold, and a member of the Great Eastern Balloon Association. Mrs. Hance is survived by a son, Timothy Hance, at home; two daughters, Jennifer Nelson, at home, and Tiffany Hance of Deerfield; her mother, Mary Lou Hull of Leigh Acres, Fla.; two brothers, George H. Hull Jr. and Robert J. Hull, both of Leigh Acres; a sister, Sue Ann Nimick of Fort Myers Beach, Fla.; an uncle, Clarence H. Miller, and an aunt, Christine Naro; and one granddaughter. Evelyn A. Owens

Mrs. Owens, 68, of Freehold Township, died Oct. 26 at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she had been a resident of Freehold Township for the past 32 years. Mrs. Owens was a secretary for Bell Labs, Holmdel. She was a communicant of St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church, Freehold. Surviving are her husband, Gerald J. Owens; a son and daughter-in-law, Steven P. and Tracey Owens of Freehold Township; two daughters and a son-in-law, Barbara L. and Scott Davis of Manassas, Va., and Carol Catala of Lakewood; and four grandchildren. A funeral liturgy was celebrated at St. Rose of Lima Church, followed by interment at Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Cemetery, Arnytown, Burlington County. Lilyan Polloway

Mrs. Polloway, 85, of Holmdel, died Oct. 26 at the Arnold Walter Nursing Home, Hazlet. She had been a resident of Holmdel for the past 30 years. Mrs. Polloway owned and operated Polloway’s Restaurant, Newark, from 1958-66. Prior to that, she was employed at Dolly Madison and at Century 21. She was predeceased by her husband, John W. Polloway in 1975; a brother, Edward Kaczyski; and a sister, Stella Kaczyski. Ms. Polloway is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Jack and Carol Ann Polloway of Shrewsbury; two sisters, Helen Kowalski of Howell Township and Rose Kazalski of Union; and two grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at St. Dorothea’s Roman Catholic Church, Eatontown. Entombment was at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington. The John E. Day Funeral Home, Red Bank, was in charge of arrangements.
