Deadline to apply for Garvin Prize Oct. 1

  • The New Jersey Historical Commission, Department of State, is accepting nominations for its 2005 Mildred Barry Garvin Prize, with nomination deadline Oct. 1. The $1,000 award is given for exceptional efforts in making students aware of and interested in African-American history. The late Garvin was a member of the New Jersey General Assembly and Historical Commission.

    Nominees should be a teacher, counselor or school librarian who has helped students learn about the African-American past. Individuals may be engaged in K-12 education in a public, private, parochial or charter school.
