Walter R. Earle
Mr. Earle, 67, of Freehold, died April 6 at New York Presbyterian Hospital, New York City. Born in Freehold, he was the son of Mary Wohr Earle and Walter D. Earle. While attending the Freehold schools, he worked for various employers in the town of Freehold. Upon graduating from high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was stationed on the USS Albany. During the latter part of his four years of service, he earned the position of Gig Coxswain (the admiral’s personal boat captain) and reported directly to Adm. John McCain, the father of Sen. John McCain. While he served as Gig Coxswain, Mr. Earle received a commendation from Adm. McCain for outstanding performance. After honorable discharge from the service in October 1958, he worked for two years as a laborer for Thomas Nicol Co. Inc. From 1960-65, he was employed by the New Jersey Department of Transportation, Division of State Aid, where he was a project inspector. He then became an inspection supervisor of construction projects for Birdsall Engineering in Belmar. In 1968 he incorporated Earle Asphalt Co., whose first project was for Lakehurst Naval Air Station. In 1974 he purchased an asphalt plant in Jackson from Gallo Asphalt Co. Mr. Earle’s companies received many national and state awards, and in 1991 he introduced an environmental company that, with the help of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection and Energy, pioneered the technology of decontaminating soil in the state. He was also a philanthropist who donated, often anonymously, money and time to charitable organizations such as the Catholic Church, St. Rose of Lima Elementary School, the borough of Freehold police and the Freehold First Aid and Emergency Squad. During the 1970s, he was on Central Jersey Bank & Trust Co.’s board of directors and also served on the executive board of trustees for the Associated Independent Contractors, as well as on the board of directors for the New Jersey Asphalt Pavement Association. Mr. Earle was predeceased by his parents and a sister, Gloria M. Witkowski. Surviving are his wife of 42 years, Marianne Dreyer Earle; four daughters, Jennifer Millar of Summit and Bay Head, Allison Cleary Earle of Ocean Township, Jessica M. Earle of Jersey City and Susan M. Earle of Freehold; three sons, Walter R. Earle II of Brielle, and Thomas J. Earle and Michael G. Earle, both of Wall Township; a sister, Catherine Ginnoulis of California; and 13 grandchildren, to whom he was better known as "Duke." The funeral liturgy was celebrated at St. Rose of Lima Chapel, Freehold, followed by interment at the parish cemetery, Freehold Township. Hayes Sr. Mr. Hayes, 78, of Howell died April 15 at Kimball Medical Center, Lakewood. Born in Jackson, he had lived there before moving 49 years ago to Howell, where he was a communicant of St. Veronica’s Roman Catholic Church. Prior to retiring in 1991, he was an electrician for 25 years with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (I.B.E.W.) Local No. 357, Perth Amboy. He was a life member and former first assistant chief of the Southard Fire Department, Howell, as well as an exempt fireman; a life member of the Howell First Aid Squad; and a member of I.B.E.W. No. 456 Retirees Club, New Brunswick. Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Doris Hayes; a son, Gerald N. Hayes Jr. of Forked River; four daughters, Jennifer J. Wagner, Margaret A. Megill and Catherine E. Capper, all of Howell, and Linda M. Prestwidge of South Pasadena, Calif.; a sister, Doris Estelle of Lakewood; and 10 grandchildren. A funeral Mass was offered at St. Veronica’s Church, followed by interment at Evergreen Cemetery, Farmingdale. C.H.T. Clayton & Son Funeral Home, Adelphia section of Howell, was in charge of arrangements. Edward Scholtz Mr. Scholtz, 81, of the Oakhurst section of Ocean Township, died March 29 at home. Born in Newark, he resided in South Dakota before moving to Oakhurst in 1967. Mr. Scholtz was club officer at Lakehurst Naval Air Station, retiring in 1972. Prior to that, he managed military clubs with the U.S. Air Force for 20 years. He served with the U.S. Army as a medic during World War II, and was recalled to active duty during the Korean War. He was a parishioner of St. Jerome Roman Catholic Church, West Long Branch. He was a volunteer at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch, for several years. He received numerous awards for his volunteer work, including the Monmouth County Volunteer of the Year, the Monmouth Medical Clara Field Award, and the Monmouth Park Community Service Award. Mr. Scholtz was predeceased by his wife, Wilma G. Wickmen Scholtz, in 2000. He is survived by a son, Edward Scholtz of Oceanport; a daughter, Barbara Miller of the Morganville section of Marlboro; a brother, Robert Scholtz of California; two sisters, Hilda Schmidt of Mountainside and Elizabeth Preusse of the Wayside section of Ocean Township; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at St. Jerome Church. Arrangements were by Damiano Funeral Home, Long Branch. James Michael Malone Mr. Malone, 66, of Bethany Beach, Del., formerly of Englishtown, died April 12 at home of pancreatic cancer. Born in New York City, he had lived in Englishtown for 35 years before moving to Delaware in 1996. He had worked for The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey for 37 years, retiring in 1995 as general manager of port facilities. He was a lector and eucharistic minister at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Bethany Beach, as well as a member of its building committee. He was also a volunteer cook at Casa San Francisco in Milton, Del. He had been a volunteer in the Diocese of Trenton and at St. Gabriel’s Roman Catholic Church, Marlboro. He was predeceased by his parents, Brigid and James Malone. Surviving are his wife, Veronica "Ronnie" Malone; a son and daughter-in-law, Kevin J. and Kathleen Malone; two daughters and a son-in-law, Mary P. Malone, and Christine and John Emmerich; a sister, Kay Malone; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at St. Ann’s Church, followed by interment at St. George’s Cemetery, Clarksville, Del. Box 465618, Cincinnati, OH 45246-9988. James M. Hasemann Mr. Hasemann, 74 , of Colts Neck died April 14 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune. Born in Matawan, he had lived in Colts Neck for the past 41 years and was a communicant of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, Colts Neck. He graduated from and had played football for Matawan High School. A U.S. Air Force veteran, he had served in the military for four years and then attended Stevens Institute of Technology, Hoboken. Mr. Hasemann worked as a mason and was treasurer of the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Local No. 5, East Brunswick. Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Sargente Hasemann; a son and daughter-in-law, James M. Jr. and Jennilee Hasemann of Gaithersburg, Md.; a daughter and son-in-law, Evelyn E. and Nicholas Iuzzolino of Millstone Township; two sisters, Ernestine Haycock and Theresa Sergewick, both of Matawan; five grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold, was in charge of arrangements. Henry Mihaly Mr. Mihaly, 78, of Freehold Township died April 12 at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. Born in Elizabeth, he had lived in Edison before moving to Freehold Township 40 years ago. A 1950 graduate of Panzer College of Physical Education and Hygiene, East Orange (now Montclair State University, Upper Montclair), he was employed by the New Jersey State Police and retired in 1980 as a captain and the assistant field operations officer. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of the Molly Pitcher Stamp Club, Freehold; the New Jersey Retired Troopers Association; American Legion Post 54 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4374, both of Freehold; the Precancel Stamp Society; and the Hope Lutheran Church, Freehold Township. Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Irene (née Petrenko) Mihaly; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Mark R. of Freehold, and David H. and Heather Tunis of Point Richmond, Calif.; two daughters and a son-in-law, Debra A. Mihaly of Waretown, and Nancy E. and the Rev. Stephen E. Sweet of Paramus; and two grandchildren. A funeral service was held at Freeman Funeral Home, Freehold, followed by interment at Brig. Gen. Costigan Mr. Costigan, 45, of Lake Worth, Fla., formerly of East Brunswick, died March 21 at home. Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a forklift driver and warehouseman with Siemens Medical Corp., Iselin section of Woodbridge, where he worked for six years. Surviving are his mother, Cloris Costigan of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; two brothers, William of Englishtown and Kurt of Jacksonville, Fla.; two sisters, Patricia Laws of Dania, Fla., and Linda Douglas of Port St. Lucie; three nephews; and his former wife, Patricia Costigan of Sayreville. Memorial services were held at Maliszewski Memorial Home, Sayreville. Elizabeth G. Burdge Mrs. Burdge, 81, of Farmingdale died April 14 at Geraldine L. Thompson Care Center, Wall Township. Born in Philadelphia, she was a lifelong Farmingdale resident. Prior to retiring in 1990, she was a waitress at Mr. Steak, Freehold Township. She was predeceased in 2001 by her husband, Albert L. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Woodrow W. and Mary Ann Scheidt Jr. of Farmingdale; two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda E. and Dwight Sledge of High Point, N.C., and Sarah Jean and John Paradise of Farmingdale; a stepson and stepdaughter-in-law, Ronald L. and Edna Burdge, also of Farmingdale; a brother, Thomas R. Knox Jr. of Pottstown, Pa.; a stepsister, Patti Anderson of Howell; 13 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. A funeral service was held at C.H.T. Clayton & Son Funeral Home, Adelphia section of Howell, with the Rev. Harvey Kelley officiating. Interment followed at Evergreen Cemetery, Farmingdale. Rocco Frazzetta Mr. Frazzetta, 77, of The Village, Fla., formerly of The Villages, Howell, died April 6 at The Village Regional Hospital in Florida. Born in Manhattan, N.Y., he had lived in Princeton for 40 years before moving to Howell in 1994, then to Florida in October. Prior to retiring in 1996, he was a self-employed painter at Princeton University for 20 years. He was a former member of The Villages Men’s Club, Howell, and the Howell Friendship and Howell Social clubs. He was also a member of the American Association of Retired People (AARP). Surviving are his wife, Grace Frazzetta; three sons, Rocco Frazzetta of Boston, Christopher R. Frazzetta of Hillsborough Township and Angelo A. Frazzetta of Johnson, Vt.; a daughter, Jennifer Frances Lutz of Brodheadsville, Pa.; a stepson and stepdaughter, Steven Golden of Hawthorne and Meryl Boyd of Freehold; three grandchildren; and three great-granddaughters. A funeral Mass was offered at St. Robert Bellarmine Roman Catholic Church, Freehold Township, followed by interment at Rocky Hill Cemetery, Rocky Hill. C.H.T.
