Sports Shorts Howell’s Michael Joseph Blum, 14, bowled a perfect 300 game at Howell Lanes during league play. Kristian Gomes and Melissa Brightman from the Barkalow School were the goal-scorers for the victorious home team at the Shore Intermediate School Field Hockey League All-Star game that was played at the Ocean Intermediate School. Gomes scored twice and Brightman once in the home team’s 3-1 triumph. The 13-team league was divided into Home and Away teams for the all-star game. Joining the Barkalow standouts on the Home team squad were Amanda Maddalana and Noelle Loizoa from Howell North. The local all-stars on the Away team were: Brittany McCormick and Sarah Sterling from Eisenhower; Lauren Bogoslen and Kayla Auci from Howell South; Ronnie Tutela and Maria Zeolf. from Manalapan-Englishtown Middle School. The Manalapan Patriots, a 9U travel baseball team, completed their fall baseball league schedule with a 9-3 mark, advancing to the playoff final. The Patriots were led by the pitching of Geremy Camme and Anthony Cardinale. The received outstanding defensive support from Louis Marotta, Timothy Quinlan, Michael Wisher and Philip Friedman. The offense was sparked by the hitting of Jeff Sansevera, Jared Kedmi, Billy Dery and Neal Kantharia. The Patriots are currently looking for a few dedicated players to fill openings on the team for the spring season, when they will be a 10U team. The Marlboro Mavericks, a 10-year-old baseball team, have been selected to be one of only 64 teams from across the United States to be invited to play in the Cooperstown Dreams Park and American Youth Baseball Hall of Fame Invitational Tournament in June 2004. The site for the tournament is the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y. The Mavericks are the first team from Marlboro to be invited to the tournament. The Mavericks, managed by Mike Elkow, won close to 70 games and several tournaments during the past year to earn their invitation. The Mavericks are: Thomas Elkow, Kevin Barden, Richie Bellemare, Scott Heinz, Brian Cali, CJ Iaccobellis, Aaron Rosen, Jordan Golinowski, Matt Lorenzetti, Dan Tramontano, Bobby Cartas and David Raffone. Mike Elkow, Mike Cartas, Les Barden and Walter Golinowski, are the coaches. Freehold Borough Bolts, won the 2003 USABL champions, defeating Edison 11-1 in the championship game. John Marx, .606, and Mike Fresta, .580, were the heavy hitters during the fall season for the Bolts. In addition to their power hitting, the Bolts could play small ball with Jason Bresnahan and his key bunting skills. In 12 games, the Bolts scored 111 runs. The Bolts are made up of freshman and JV players from Freehold Borough High School. The Bolts are: Neil Bolton, Jason Baggitt, Jose Claudio, Jason Bresnahan, John Wilder, Jimmy Wider, Rich Pultar, Billy Ferro, John Buchalski, Chris Webber, John Weir, Joe Neglia, Mike Fresta, Jeff Gluck, John Marx, Joe Pistilli, Michael Marx and Brian Bresnahan. The Monmouth Maniacs, a U12 girls fast-pitch softball team based in Manalapan, is looking for several dedicated players to complete its spring 2004 roster. The event was held Oct. 18 and 19. After shooting one under par, 70, on the first day, he had an eight-shot lead. He finished with a 78 on Sunday to win by four shots. He’s the youngest member to win this event at the club. NASCAR Busch Grand National Series star Johnny Sauter of Necedah, Wis., will strap into a Modified stock car to compete in both qualifying and main event action during the 30th annual Turkey Derby. Perhaps most remembered for his thrilling BGN win in Richmond, Va. earlier this year after a torrid battle with NASCAR Winston Cup champion Matt Kenseth, Sauter will strap himself behind the wheel of the Rich Gould No. 85 Modified. "Johnny Sauter is a real racer," Gould said. "When we had the opportunity to put this deal together, he jumped at it. Johnny is coming to race. He is coming to win. It won’t cost the fans an extra penny to see him race. He just wants to race in and win in a Modified." Sauter, who currently rides in the top 10 in BGN points, will carry sponsorship from Nassau Painting, Lynch and Son Trucking and Agin Signs and Designs on the Gould No. 58. |
