The Arc of Monmouth salutes work of family caregivers The caregiver of a person with a developmental disability has a variety of responsibilities. If you care for a young child, your greatest achievement could be teaching the use of a spoon. Throughout the day, every meal becomes a lesson of eating in a socially acceptable manner. Successful toilet training could take two years or more to master, or it could end up never being an independent skill for an individual with a disability. The family caregiver, parents, siblings give love and attention when the school day is over and when school is over for good. The family caregiver of the adult with developmental disabilities has to worry about the loneliness their loved one endures. Forced leisure can cripple the emotions, making it hard to progress into adulthood irregardless of IQ scores or physical motor skills. November is "National Family Caregiver’s Month." We at The Arc of Monmouth would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank those who have invested their time and love to improve the lives of relatives with developmental disabilities. We at The Arc do our best to help you in your quest for quality programs and housing for your child, brother or sister, but we know that it is your devotion to that individual that has made the difference. Together we will reach your goals. Rhona Levy President The Arc of Monmouth Tinton Falls |
