Nominees in education
sought for history prize
The New Jersey Historical Commission, Department of State, is now accepting nominations for its 2004 Mildred Barry Garvin Prize. The Garvin Prize is an award of $1,000 given for exceptional efforts in making students aware of and interested in African-American history. Garvin (1926-1992) was a member of the New Jersey General Assembly and the Historical Commission, and her legislation established the Commission’s Afro-American History Program in 1984.
Nominees should be a teacher, counselor or school librarian who has helped students learn about the African-American past and how it related to New Jersey. Nominees may be engaged in K-12 education in a public, private, parochial or charter school. Nominations must be postmarked by Oct. 1. For details, call Giles R.
