Local club did a good job with new overlook

As historian for Manalapan Township, I am pleased to report about a wonderful new site located on the Mon-mouth Battlefield State Park which was dedicated on April 27.

The members of Molly Pitcher Woman’s Club of Freehold contacted Dr. Garry Stone, the state park historian, as to a project to which they could contribute.

They, together with Dr. Stone and Charles Sary, decided that an overlook platform where Molly Pitcher (Mary Hays) could have carried the water from, would be an excellent project.

The club started raising funds in 2001 and with their funds and the assistance from the state, a natural walkway with a wooden deck leading to the site was constructed.

As Garry Stone reports, "No one really knows which of seven springs Hays took the water from." As you may recall, over the years there have been several possible sites.

I highly recommend your visiting this authentic historic site. Just east of the Tennent crossroad and adjacent to Old Tennent Cemetery on Route 522, you can park at the Monmouth Battlefield Park office and follow the pink signs on the path to the wooden deck overlook (about one-third of a mile).

The Molly Pitcher Woman’s Club deserves praise for initiating and seeing to completion this worthwhile project.
