Former Freehold Borough municipal administrator Robert F. Casey has been named Manalapan’s acting administrator.

The Township Committee named Casey to the position at its May 13 meeting. He is expected to work two days a week and serve until a permanent administrator is found.

Casey had been working for the township one day a week as an assistant to James Devereaux, who was Manalapan’s administrator for nine years before resigning on May 2.

"Mr. Casey has been an administrator for many, many years," Mayor Drew Shapiro said. "We are very confident in his experience and more than anything, his [ability to] help in finding a replacement" for the administrator’s job.

Shapiro said Casey is associated with an organization which facilitates the search for administrators and has more than 30 years of experience in this kind of search.

"His experience in just this type of search definitely expedites finding a quality replacement for the township," Shapiro said. "We are confident in the interim that Mr. Casey’s experience will help the township in all of its needs."

The committee has authorized a contract to be signed with Jersey Professional Management for temporary management consultant services which will be provided by Casey.

The maximum amount of the contract will be $23,040. The firm will be paid at an hourly rate for the services rendered by the acting administrator/managing consultant. Casey is an associate of Jersey Professional Management.

Casey was the municipal administrator in Freehold Bor-ough from November 1989 until his retirement in March 1999. He remained in Freehold Borough as a consultant to the mayor and Borough Council from April to December 1999.

In other committee business, it was announced that Manalapan Day will be celebrated on June 14. Route 522 (Freehold-Englishtown Road) will be closed to traffic from Farm Tree Road to Tennent Road. A detour will be established which will include the following roads: Farm Tree Road between Route 522 and Elliot Road; Elliot Road between Farm Tree and Chaucer roads; and all of Chaucer Road. There will be no parking on those streets from noon to midnight on June 14.

An evening fireworks display has been approved for "Manalapan Under the Stars" on the evening of June 14. The rain date is June 15.

And, the Township Committee has appointed Carol Puorro, Ray Proietti, Hugh A. MacKenzie, Jean Baker and Dierdre Thomson to the Community Development Citizens Participation Group for 2003.
