LIPA TAGNER, 79, of Manalapan died Jan. 23 at Atlantic Coast Rehabilitation and Health Center, Lakewood. Mr. Tagner was born in Chrzanow, Poland, and had resided in Brooklyn, N.Y., before moving to Manalapan in 1954. He was the proprietor of Hoboken Wine and Liquors, Hoboken, before his retirement. He was a vice president of the Perrineville Jewish Center, Millstone; and a member of Chrzanow’er Young Men’s Association. Mr. Tagner is survived by his wife, Bronia Schwarzbard Tagner; two daughters and a son-in-law, Esther and Barry Torem of Needham, Mass., and Frances Tagner of Wayne; a sister and brother-in-law, Malka and Meyer Bajtel of Brooklyn, N.Y.; one nephew; one niece; and cousins. Funeral services were held at the Perrineville Jewish Chapel, followed by interment at Perrineville Jewish Cemetery, Millstone. The Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold, was in charge of arrangements.

MARGARET "PEGGY" ALLAIRE MacDONALD JEFFERY, 66, of Red Bank, died Jan. 17 at New York University Hospital, N.Y. Born in Red Bank, she previously lived in Lincroft and resided in Red Bank the past 10 years. She was a homemaker. She was a member and active with the Sunday school choir of the First Presbyterian Church at Red Bank-Tower Hill, Red Bank. She was president of the Lincroft Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary. She was a member of the founding family of Allaire State Park. Her activities included volunteering at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank, and serving as president of the Coordinating Council of Middletown South High School. She was predeceased by her parents Robert G. and Margaret S. Sutton MacDonald. She is survived by her husband, Robert J. Jeffery Sr. of Red Bank; two sons, Robert Jeffery Jr. of Freehold and Peter M. Jeffery of Millstone; two sisters, Roberta Braswell of Shrewsbury and JoAnn Smiley of West Palm Beach, Fla.; and four grandchildren. Services were arranged by John E. Day Funeral Home, Red Bank, with a Mass at the First Presbyterian Church at Red Bank-Tower Hill. Interment was at Fair View Cemetery, Middletown. ETHEL GREENSWAG SHOR of East Brunswick died Jan. 23 in Central New Jersey Jewish Home for the Aged, Somerset section of Franklin. Her husband, Louis Shor, died in 1968. Surviving are two daughters, Marilyn Friedes of East Brunswick and Kelli Richman of the Morganville section of Marlboro; a brother, Sidney Greenswag of Davenport, Iowa; a sister, Ida Mayer of Highland Park, Ill.; and five grandchildren. Arrangements were under the direction of Crabiel Parkwest Funeral Chapel, New Brunswick, with services at the East Brunswick Jewish Center. Interment was in Floral Park Cemetery, Deans section of South Brunswick. ALBERT E. JONES, 74, of Spotswood died Jan. 17 in St. Peter’s University Hospital, New Brunswick. Surviving are his wife, Patricia Murphy Jones; a daughter, Patricia Dixon of Florence; two sons, Carlton Jones of Spring Hill, Fla., and Richard Jones of Florence; a stepson, James Patrick Hannon of Old Bridge; two stepdaughters, Mary DeLorenzo of Manalapan and Marcella Hammes of Melbourne, Fla.; and 12 grandchildren. Services were held at Brunswick Memorial Home, East Brunswick. Cremation was private. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 2550 Route 1, North Brunswick 08902.

EILEEN M. GORHAU, 58, of the Madison Park section of Old Bridge died Jan. 15 at home. Surviving are her husband, Frederick G. Gorhau; a son, Frederick J. Gorhau of Marlboro; two daughters, Lisa Gorhau and Monica Gorhau, both of East Windsor; a brother, Robert Tuebner of the Marlton section of Evesham; two sisters, Claire Molinue of Maple Shade and Karen Boguski of Cherry Hill; and four grandchildren. Arrangements were under the direction of Michael Hegarty Funeral Home, Old Bridge. Interment was in Chestnut Hill Cemetery, East Brunswick.

WILLIAM F. BARTON, 84, of Naples, Fla., formerly of Howell, died Jan. 20 at North Collier Hospital, Naples. Mr. Barton was born in Freehold Township and had resided in Howell before moving to Naples in 1983. He owned and operated a farm in Howell for 35 years, retiring in 1960. After his retirement from farming, he was employed by the C.H.T. Clayton and Son Funeral Home, Adelphia section of Howell, where he worked for 20 years before retiring in 1981. Mr. Barton was a member of Bethesda United Methodist Church, Adelphia, and was an associate member of the North Naples United Methodist Church. He was a former chief and life member of the Adelphia Fire Co., Adelphia; a member of the Olive Branch Lodge No. 16 Free and Accepted Masons; and the Order of the Eastern Star, Molly Pitcher Chapter No. 198, Freehold. He was a member of the Scottish Rite, Valley of Trenton; and the past grand master of the Tall Cedars, Asbury Park Forest Lodge. He was a member of the Araba Shrine Temple, Fort Meyers; and past president of the Camel Patrol of Naples Shrine. He was also the past master of the Adelphia Grange; and a member of the Train Collectors Association. Mr. Barton is survived by his wife of 65 years, Louise Diem Barton; two daughters and a son-in-law, Barbara and James Reed of Howell, and Beverly Emonds of Blackwood; and two granddaughters. Funeral services were held at the C.H.T. Clayton and Son Funeral Home with the Rev. Galene Boyett officiating, followed by Interment at Adelphia Cemetery, Adelphia. ROSE GALLAGHER, 90, of Manalapan died Jan. 16 at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she had resided there before moving to Manalapan a year ago. Mrs. Gallagher was a homemaker. She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph. Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Paul Heim of Manalapan, and Maureen and Edward Rice of Larchmont, N.Y.; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Freeman Manalapan-Marlboro Funeral Home, Marlboro, followed by interment at Forest Green Park Cemetery, Morganville section of Marlboro. HAROLD L. HANSEN, 87, of Howell died Jan. 21 at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. Born in Perth Amboy, he had resided in Freehold before moving to Howell in 1974. Mr. Hansen was employed at E.I. DuPont, Parlin, for more than 40 years, retiring in 1973 as a traffic manager. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was also in the U.S. Naval Reserve for almost 30 years, retiring at the rank of senior chief shopkeeper in 1973. Mr. Hansen was a member of Bethesda United Methodist Church, Adelphia section of Howell; Olive Branch Lodge No. 16 Free and Accepted Masons, Freehold; a past commander of American Legion Post No. 54, Freehold; a member of Shrine and Crescent Temple, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 4374, Freehold; a member of the Loyal Order of Danish Brotherhood; and the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Trenton. Mr. Hansen is survived by his wife, Rita Brennan Hansen; two daughters, Patricia Sovino of Freehold and Linda Hansen of Bradenton, Fla.; two stepsons, Brian Lynch of Milltown and James Lynch of Ossining, N.Y.; a brother, Herbert L. of Adelphia; a sister, Emiley Brose of Fords; a sister-in-law, Johannah Hansen of Adelphia; and nine grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the C.H.T. Clayton and Son Funeral Home, Adelphia, with the Rev. Galene Boyett officiating. Interment followed at Adelphia Cemetery, Adelphia. RUSSELL JOHN HIBBETS, 65, of Colts Neck died Jan. 18 in Howell. Born in Asbury Park, he moved to Colts Neck 24 years ago. Mr. Hibbets was a self-employed painting contractor. He served in the U.S. National Guard. Mr. Hibbets is survived by a son, Russell J. Jr. of Colts Neck; a daughter, Barbara Ann Atterberry of Anacortes, Wash.; two grandchildren; and his friend, Charlotte Sterner of Colts Neck. Funeral services were held at the Freeman Funeral Home, Freehold, followed by interment at Glenwood Cemetery, West Long Branch.

JAMES L. LEID III, 51, of Marlboro died Jan. 22 at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. Born in Bellevue, Ohio, he had resided in Buffalo, N.Y., before moving to Marlboro 33 years ago. Mr. Leid was an accountant for I.T. Corp., Trenton, for six years. Prior to that he was an accountant for ADT, New York, for 18 years. Mr. Leid was predeceased by his father, James Leid Jr. Surviving are his mother, Laura Murphy Leid, with whom he lived; a brother and sister-in-law, Jeff and Rita Leid of Midwest City, Okla.; and several aunts, uncles and cousins in Bellevue, Ohio. Funeral services were held in Bellevue, Ohio, followed by interment in Bellevue Cemetery. The Freeman Funeral Home, Freehold, was in charge of arrangements.

ROBERT J. LUHRS, 80, of Howell died Jan. 18 at Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune. Born in Jersey City, he had resided in Nutley before moving to Howell in 1987. Mr. Luhrs was a foreman for Brotherton Construction Co., Hackensack, for more than 25 years, retiring in 1982. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Steward Edger Post No. 493, Nutley. He was a past president of the Surrey Downs Men’s Club; a member of the American Society of Notaries; and a trustee of the Presbyterian Homes for Housing and Urban Development. He was a longtime member of St. Paul’s Congregation Church, Nutley, where he was on the board of directors and served as a Sunday school teacher. Mr. Luhrs was a member of Nutley Lodge No. 25 Free and Accepted Masons, where he served as master in 1977 and as the lodge secretary for 11 years; and a member of the Masters and Wardens Association, 8th Masonic District. He was a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason; a dual member of Olive Branch Lodge No. 16 Free and Accepted Masons; and a member of the Freehold High Twelve Club No. 542. Mr. Luhrs is survived by his wife, Mildred Brotherton Luhrs; a daughter and son-in-law, Laura C. and Lawrence D. Devore of Toms River; and one granddaughter. Funeral services were held at the C.H.T. Clayton and Son Funeral Home, Adelphia section of Howell, with the Rev. Galene Boyett officiating.

DOROTHY A. MATTHEWS, 80, of Howell died Jan. 21. Born in Hamilton Square, she was a lifelong resident of Howell. Mrs. Matthews was a homemaker. She was predeceased by her husband, Harold "Booty" Matthews, in 1999; and two brothers, Arthur Brown in 1982 and William Brown in 2000. Surviving are three sons, Robert Klile of Arizona, and James Matthews and Jack Matthews, both of Howell; a daughter, Joyce McGowan of Toms River; two brothers, Robert Brown of Lakewood and Leonard Brown of Brick; two sisters, Mae Marks of Point Pleasant and Joan Nishimura of Orlando, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. The C.H.T. Clayton and Son Funeral Home, Adelphia section of Howell, was in charge of arrangements.

MYRNA M. SANDS, 65, of Marlboro died Jan. 21 at Mount Sinai Hospital, New York City. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she had resided there many years before moving to Marlboro 24 years ago. Mrs. Sands was a homemaker. She is survived by her husband, John; a son, David, at home; two daughters and a son-in-law, Traci Sands, at home, and Lisa and Matthew Hermann of New York City; and one granddaughter. The Bloomfield-Cooper Jewish Chapel, Manalapan, was in charge of arrangements.

CHARLES J. WALCSAK, 82, of the Whiting section of Manchester Township, died Jan. 23 at Community Medical Center, Toms River. Born in Newark, he had resided in Old Bridge for 25 years before moving to Whiting 18 years ago. Mr. Walcsak was a serviceman for General Electric-Hotpoint Co., Oakhurst, for 31 years, retiring in 1980. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Audubon Social Club; and the Pine Ridge Residence Association, Manchester. Mr. Walcsak was predeceased by his wife, Cora. Surviving are two daughters and a son-in-law, Charlene J. of the Whiting section of Manchester, and Carol J. and the Rev. Raymond G. Burnett of Marlboro; two sisters, Mary Simone of Union and Helen Scardefield of Voorhees; and two grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the Freeman Manalapan-Marlboro Funeral Home, Manalapan, followed by entombment at Woodbridge Memorial Gardens, Woodbridge.
